In Herzog, Saul Bellow employs an omniscient narrator and a character -narrator, Herzog.Though the story mainly revealed from Herzog ’ s stream of consciousness by using such techniques as interior monologue, free indirect thought and psycho -narration, Herzog is unreliable. The shift of different perspectives by using different personal pronouns (“he”,“you”,“I”) indicates a speaking self, inner voice and split selves of Herzog. In the end, Herzog overcomes his inner self and calms down in Ludeyville .The circular plot structure is one of the obvious features of the novel .  相似文献

When we read Shake speare's tragedies,we can not help feeling thatthe most painful and the most pathetic one might be Othello. For inHamlet, the hero knows his rival olearly to be his uncle clandius, themost vicious, incestus villain, thus he is on guard;in King Lear, theold king is the only victim of human ingratitude;only in othello, thenoble hearted hero is completely in the darkness, unaware of his enemy, and mislays his trust upon the most incomparably ingenious and unscru-pulous villain. He is led by the nose.to believe that his newly weddedwife is not as pure as he has thought before and finally to strangle thesublimely innocent and pure angel upon her wedding sheet, conceiving ofhimself as the agent not of vengeance but of divine justice. This mightbe the cruelest act that has ever happened inhuman history. This tragedyis partly due to the intrigues of the shameless villain Iago, partly dueto the vunerableness of the hero's character.  相似文献

Hemingway established a well-known literary theory - iceberg principle. He said he always attempted to create his literary works according to this principle. In his opinion,if a prose writer has a pretty clear idea of what he writes about, then he can omit the things he knows, and the readers will strongly feel that what the writer has omitted seems to have been written as long as what he writes is authentic.Hemingway himself once said,"The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one eighth of it being above water."Here, one eighth refers to the information given by the author, and the rest refers to the unwrit ten information that can be acquired in readers’imagination on the basis of the one eighth. The Killers is a good example of Hemingway’s iceberg principle. This essay will analyse the characters in it to show how the principle was used in this short story. With no doubt the iceberg principle leaves a large space for the readers to imagine and better understand Hemingway’s works.  相似文献
