以加州州立大学这一教研型高校与加州大学这一研究型高校的教师代表为样本,通过质性访谈、编码分析发现美国不同类型高校的教师对本科教学地位、目标、认可与回报的认知存在明显差异。加州州立大学的教师视教学为“首要使命”,认为本科教育旨在促进学生的“个体发展”,教学为他们带来了多元成就;加州大学的教师则认为教学是基本职责之一,致力于训练“未来的研究者”,教学上的认可主要来自学生和同行。这种认知差异的直接原因在于各校在教师晋升中导向明确,组织使命得以内化为教师的个人目标。美国研究型大学同样注重在教学管理和人事制度上对教师的教学行为予以规范,保障本科教育质量。我国大学要重视本科教育,更应当提升教学在教师评价中的地位。  相似文献

Existing university ranking systems blur differences between Higher Education Institutions because they only focus on research. The increased breadth, diversity and complexity of Higher Education Institutions’ missions are repeatedly overlooked causing a low visibility to a wide audience. This paper demonstrates the possibilities to measure other missions such as international orientation and regional engagement. Therefore, the results of 618 Higher Education Institutions (Effective March 2016) in U-Multirank, an international university ranking, are used. The results show the impressive variety in the higher education systems among European regions. Every region found missions in which they effectively perform thus proving the importance of each mission. The multidimensional ranking takes into account the complexity of Higher Education Institutions’ missions and capturing the relevance of Higher Education Institutions third mission’s activities adequately. Transparency across all missions is the only possibility to make the performances honourable. As research is not the only remarkable mission of Higher Education Institutions, teaching is not the only necessary mission. When other missions are overlooked, the performance measurement systems hinder mission diversity in higher education.

In perhaps the first empirical investigation of the impact of global forces upon U.S. and Canadian community colleges, I examine their missions and structures, noting alterations associated with globalization. In my examination of Canadian colleges, I find that global forces, such as international economies, international political struggles and their consequences, and global communication systems, do affect these institutions. These forces are influential in altering college behaviors, including changes to institutional mission and institutional structures. That is, colleges are increasingly oriented to the marketplace, more responsive to public demands and preferences, and increasingly more directed by provincial governments to serve both political and economic priorities.This paper is based upon a multi-case, qualitative, longitudinal study of seven (7) community colleges, four (4) of which are Canadian colleges. The purpose of the study was two-fold: first, to identify and analyze actual institutional behaviors of community colleges as they adjust to demands inherent in the globalization process; and second, to identify the evolving development of the community college as a social institution, specifically by focusing upon the actions and conditions that have led to mission alteration.  相似文献

Universities find themselves faced with the conflicting institutional demands of being cathedrals of learning and research as well as introducing managerial and corporate-like structures. Despite many studies in higher education research that focus on how this situation affects the mission of universities, the role of imprinting has not received considerable attention yet. Our study aims at closing this research gap by analyzing the influence of institutional founding conditions on mission statements of universities. Results show that imprinting does not affect the introduction of mission statements, but rather their contents. The role of imprinting is, however, moderated by the power and the reputation of universities. In discussing these findings within the context of higher education research, our study contributes to a better understanding of developments in the field of universities.  相似文献

The effectiveness of higher education institutions has bases in institutional structures and cultures. However, structure and culture represent abstract concepts while institutions realize high performance in practice. Given their salience in higher education, mission statements and campus space bring structure and culture into the realm of practice. Moving from abstract to concrete, this paper shows how mission statements embody structure and culture and how physical space, in turn, enacts mission in day-to-day institutional life. By harnessing the mission-space linkage, strategy can access structure and culture for the purpose of increasing effectiveness.  相似文献

After the Revolution of Dignity (2014), Ukraine signed an Association Agreement with the European Union. In the context of European integration, new legislation on higher education has been adopted. Changes in the institutional environment expect responses from higher education institutions, in particular changes in the organizational identities of Ukrainian universities that are claimed through the mission statements. As Ukrainian universities are in the stage of transition from the Soviet past to the European future, it is of primary importance how they interpret and respond to the changes in the institutional environment, claiming their organizational identity through mission statements. To answer this question, sociological institutionalism is applied as a theoretical framework for the exploration of how institutions shape the organizational identities of universities. A content analysis of the mission statements of 46 Ukrainian universities was conducted: 26 defined before the adoption of the new legislation on higher education in 2014 and 20 formulated after this date.  相似文献

Development in the understanding and education of responsible citizenship is an important priority for higher education institutions. Evidence of this importance is expressed in the mission statements of many colleges and universities throughout the United States. As increasing numbers of students take advantage of distance education, it is essential to consider both the ways students can engage in experientially based learning environments that promote civic engagement as well as the manner by which institutions can fulfill this aspect of their missions. This article explores the emergence and impact of the mission groups in British higher education. The central argument is that given the development of a mass and diversified model of higher education it was inevitable that the higher education institutions would form pressure groups, while increased marketisation and growing inter‐institutional competition have helped to sustain their presence. With particular reference to their input into the policy making process, it analyses how they contribute to a new politics of policy‐making and concludes by considering the future of the mission groups in the light of the recent demise of the 1994 Group.  相似文献

Mission statements have been a staple of higher education institutions for decades, but little is known of how they are used as a tool for institutional decision-making. Using three distinct data sources, this study relies on framing theory to analyse the perceptions of university presidents in the United States on the role of mission statements in deciding when and how to communicate. Further, we compare the espoused values of university mission statements to the statements university presidents made following the 2016 US presidential election. Findings indicate presidents view mission statements as central to their decision to communicate and our analysis reveals some congruence between mission statements and public statements.  相似文献

Campus crisis management remains an understudied topic in the context of COVID-affected higher education. In this paper, we contrasted the ability to tame the wicked problems brought by the pandemic of COVID-19 in private and public universities in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Colombia, India, Kazakhstan, Uganda, and Ukraine. The cross-country analysis and diversity of institutional types allowed us to consider a wide range of challenges faced by academic leaders and their institutions during the global pandemic. By drawing on institutional policy reviews and interviews with university administrators, we have examined tensions between the human and institutional agencies on these crisis-stricken campuses given differing institutional coupling, sizes, resources, and missions. The focus on agential co-dependencies and institutional coupling lays the ground for conceptualizing campus crisis management as a culturally specific construct in the context of higher education affected by the global pandemic.  相似文献

Education was an instrument in Christian missions’ and colonial powers’ civilisation projects. At the same time, education was also instrumental in fostering opposition. This article approaches perceptions of education mainly from the perspective of Norwegian Lutheran missionaries in French colonial Madagascar during the 1940s. The focus is on how the mission, after several years under a secular French colonial government, related to the change in educational policy that came with the rise and fall of the anti-republican and pro-religious Vichy regime. When secularisation and assimilation policies were again implemented after the Second World War, Protestant missions struggled for influence. Madagascar experienced a bloody anti-foreign revolt in 1947 for which French administrators, among others, blamed education. Norwegian missionaries strongly opposed the revolt, but they were also in favour of leading education onto a Malagasy track. In this shifting colonial Malagasy context, mission education contributed to Christianisation, Frenchification and Malgachisation in the Malagasy society.  相似文献

The current reform movement in higher education involves efforts to alter the missions of universities and the forms of scholarship necessq to accomplish these missions. The authors explore the changing contexts in the professoriate based on this redefinition of scholarship and cite the impact of changes on faculty roles and responsibilities, faculty socialization, and faculty evaluation. They indicate that the current reform movement will lead to significant changes in the way faculty work Department faculty will be given the autonomy to determine the mission of the department, the kinds of scholarship needed to fulfill that mission, and how to evaluate scholarship in their discipline. Formalized, structured socialization processes will be needed to provide consistent formal and informal messages to faculty regarding their changing roles and responsibilities, especially since individual faculty may have very different roles and responsibilities. Faculty will work in interdisciplinary, collaborative groups to bring together the knowledge bases needed to solve current societal problems.  相似文献

Organizational effectiveness and mission orientations of two-year colleges   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study investigated the applicability of Cameron's (1978, 1983) nine dimensions of organizational effectiveness in a nationally representative sample of two-year colleges and examined differences in those dimensions for colleges that had decidedly different mission orientations. The results strongly support the applicability of these nine dimensions of organizational effectiveness in two-year colleges and indicate that the effectiveness of these institutions varies significantly depending on their mission orientation. From a global perspective, it appears that two-year colleges with tripartite and dual missions are the most and least effective, respectively, while those with a singular mission occupy a middle position. The implications of these findings for research on the effectiveness of two-year colleges and for initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of their management practices and institutional performance are discussed.An earlier draft of this paper was presented at the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education, Boston, November 1991.  相似文献
