Euphemism is a common linguistic phenomenon, which is closely related to culture backgrounds, religious thoughts, life styles, etc. A short introduction to euphemism in English and Chinese will benefit our future intercultural communication. Lots of scholars had studied euphemism from various ways. Such as linguistic, social-linguistic, rhetoric view, pragmatics and so on. From all those studies, we can easily found out that the development of euphemism have a stong relationship with the development of taboo words more or less. In this paper, the author elaborates this topic from their relationship. At the very beginning, a semantic definition and classification were given. a basic knowledge of comparison about taboo words in English and Chinese gave us a basic meaning of the existence of euphemism. Euphemisms are the substance of taboo words. From the relationship of taboos and euphemisms illustrates the national characters in English and Chinese euphemisms. There are religious characters in English euphemisms and class characters in Chinese euphemisms. We know that the communication between us should under the principle of cooperation. But the differences between different culture background, age, sex, status and positions always make the principle out of effect. So euphemism can do a lot to maintain people's social status in our today's society, especially in intercultural communication. A preoccupation about euphemism can avoid some embarrassments in intercultural communication. If we want success in our future profession, a clear knowledge of euphemism is necessary.  相似文献

With the rapid development of the society, people are expected to improve their language quality as well. So when people have to express something unpleasant, they prefer to employ some mild, implicit and euphemistic expressions. Meanwhile,an increasing number of scientists indulge themselves in studying English euphemisms from different perspectives, such as linguistics, pragmatics, and psychology and so on. English Euphemisms applied in class can not only help create a relaxing and lively atmosphere but also protect the students’ self-esteem and stimulate their interests in English. However, the researches on the effects of applying English euphemisms in English class are few. Therefore, Based on Face-saving Theory, this paper intends to highlight the importance of applying English euphemisms in English teaching.  相似文献

Many scholars have contributed to the research of Empty Categories since 1980s; however, most of them just concentrated on PRO, pro and variable, with little attention paid to NP-trace. Under the theoretical framework of GB theory, this paper will make a comparative study on NP-trace between English and Chinese from the aspect of Binding theory, the restrictions on NP-movement, and the motivation for NP-movement, in order to find out whether the NP-trace in Chinese is the same as or different from that in English, the result of which may indicate some syntactic features of the two languages.  相似文献

Literary writing is inseparable from aesthetic values and it is the same as with literary traslation. However, due to different social and cultural traditions, people from different culture have different presuppositions and expectations of beauty, which cause difficulty in conveying this beauty in literary translation. This paper tries to analyze the respective effects of the Chinese and western aesthetic values on the translation between the Chinese language and the English one.By analyzing the differences in the aspects of philosophical influence, moral standards and the form between the Chinese culture and the English one, this paper concludes that it is the task of the translators to make some adjustment in order to cater to the aesthetic values of the target language and convey the beauty of the original work to readers at the same time.  相似文献

Idioms are essence of a language and a kind of special and fixed phrases or short sentences in the long period of language use.Because animals have been considered as people’s best friends for hundreds of years, people adopt different species of animals as metaphors to express all their emotions. However, due to the different national characteristics between English and Chinese, such as geographical conditions and tradition so in most cases easterners and westerners have different attitudes and understanding towards same animals,of course, some animal idioms have the same meaning.  相似文献

Chinglish is what occurs when the Chinese language and English language crash into one another. When native Chinese speakers who are learning English attempt to directly translate Chinese into English, using Chinese sentence structure, wording and grammar,a blend of Chinese and English happens.Among Chinese English teachers and English as a second language (ESL) foreign experts working with students, this phenomenon is commonly referred to as Chinglish. In order to help students to overcome Chinglish in their oral English and cultivate their sensibility of foreign culture and mode of thinking the awareness of the causes of Chinglish is a must. This paper focuses on analyzing the causes in terms of negative transfer of mother tongue and the differences between modes of thinking and cultural backgrounds.  相似文献

As a linguistic phenomenon, euphemism exists in all kinds of languages, so it is widely used by various circles of society. It is not only a linguistic phenomenon, but also a kind of social phenomenon, which is a reflection of the social culture in the language. Euphemism has already penetrated into all aspects of daily life, and reflected different national psychologies and cultural differences. As the development of the society and human civilization and the accelerated process of economic globalization, the role euphemism plays in human communication especially in cross-cultural communication has been increasingly prominent. Here a comparative study on English and Chinese euphemisms is made to help to be familiar with similarities and differences of the use of euphemism in English and Chinese languages so as to reduce errors resulting in cross- culture communication, and improve cross-cultural communicative competence.  相似文献

It is of great importance to obtain good collocation knowledge for fluent and appropriate language use as many words are used in a limited set of collocations. Studies on cognitive linguistics show that cognitive factors play an important role in collocation study as most collocations are metaphorically motivated, and that collocational behavior is influenced by a number of factors, including the semantics of the individual items themselves, the influence of other well-established meanings, the influence of metaphor, the influence of semantic prosody, etc.. Therefore, it is significant to explain and teach certain types of collocations in language teaching by considering the underlying factors which influence the collocational process. Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners have some special collocation problems in their English learning, which not only result from grammatical incompetence, but also from their lack of conceptual fluency and metaphor competence. The disclosure of similarities and differences between the conceptual systems of English and Chinese will help to illuminate the nature of negative transfer of their first language in collocation acquisition of Chinese EFL learners. The author of the paper, by disclosing the interaction between collocation and metaphor from cognitive, linguistic, and social perspectives, proposes semantic-oriented principle, pragmatics-oriented principle, and culture-oriented principle to incorporate cognitive factors to collocation teaching. It is suggested that stress should be given to the teaching of conceptual metaphor and its mechanisms in collocation teaching before students can finally improve collocation competence with a focus on metaphor awareness.  相似文献

Politeness is a very important topic in modern linguistics. With the development of the study of linguistics, a lot of people lay the emphasis on the study of politeness language. It can be observed in all languages and cultures as a social phenomenon, which plays an important role in individuals’ linguistic behavior. But due to different culture, different politeness principles and other reasons, different peo ple have different understandings about the definition of politeness, and they deal with politeness in different ways. Through different study background, principle and theory, this paper focuses on the politeness language in English and Chinese culture caused the differences. Politeness languages are mainly expressed in the forms of address, greeting, congratulation, appreciation and apology . The biggest difference between English and Chinese is that the Chinese system is profusion and complicated, but the English one is quite simple. Age, income, marriage and religion, etc. are taboos in English and people in western countries like to talk about weather when they meet each other; greeting in Chinese almost includes different things about one’s life. Appreciation in Chinese is not used frequently. Peo ple do not often say "thank you" to their families or friends. Appreciation in English can be used among families, friends, and colleagues and so on. At the end of this thesis, a conclusion is drawn; limitations and some suggestions of the research are stated!  相似文献

In the study of metaphor, as a branch of the general cognitive science, cognitive linguistics has been walking forward at all times. In recent years, attention has gradually been paid on the metaphor study in the Chinese academic circles, and some domestic scholars have carried out research one after another, mainly through some daily expression, poetry, prose or novel to analyze and demonstrate the similarities and differences of love metaphors in Chinese and western culture. The new exploration of the role of metaphor in poetry and the cognitive mechanism was included, and it gained some achievements. The innovation of this paper is that it breaks the confinition to everyday expression, literature, combing with classic and modern songs in English and Chinese, to compare the love metaphor in English and Chinese songs.  相似文献
