Since its inception in 2007, Springshare's LibGuides has become a popular content management system (CMS) with academic libraries. The challenges of managing LibGuides content through a cohesive content strategy have not been well documented. The researchers conducted a survey of academic libraries that were using the LibGuides platform in Fall 2019 to determine how institutions are managing content challenges. Of 120 respondents, only 53% of the respondents indicated that their institutions had content guidelines that LibGuides authors were expected to follow. The top three most observed elements of these content guidelines were page design (80%), content reuse policies (77%), naming conventions (73%), and navigation (3%). 15% of respondents' institutions did not review guides once they were published. Of those that reviewed guides post-publication, authors (84%) most frequently reviewed their own guides. These findings imply that LibGuides are largely cared for on an honour system. Guidelines tend towards quantifiable elements and omit more abstract concepts.  相似文献

Creative ideas and technology across the world for utilization have influenced the ways academic libraries present themselves to their users. Before digital era, librarians developed print subject guides and pathfinders to highlight important information resources in different fields, and the guides were brought online as libraries created web sites and started to depend on web resources. With the emergence of Web 2.0 technologies, librarians across the globe saw an opportunity to create more appealing and interactive online guides for the millennial patrons. These technologies simplified the creation and maintenance of guides such as wikis and FAQ's and subject guides to provide access to electronic resources.Academic librarians in the Sub-Saharan Africa as their counterparts in the rest of the world, are under pressure to offer relevant information services to satisfy varied client needs. Studies have shown that librarians believe that creating LibGuides enhances their knowledge of subject resources as reference service. According to Springshare (2020), 6100 libraries in 82 countries have implemented the LibGuides platform. There is however no clear indication of how many institutions in low middle-income countries have implemented libguides. This paper gives insight into the context of Sub Saharan Africa and lists the specific institutions that have adopted libguides. The Aga Khan University in Uganda prides itself as the pioneer of libguides implementation as a reference service. Since implementation in 2014, usage statistics have shown a gradual and steady improvement in access and use of e-resources such as journal and ebooks. This is largely attributed to the ease of reference and awareness aided by libguided. Many universities in Uganda have benchmarked with the Aga Khan University library and it is hoped that in the near future a number of other libraries will also implement libguides as reference service tools.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A year ago, West Chester University Libraries began using the LibGuides library content management system. In the 1st year since implementing LibGuides (http://subjectguides.wcupa.edu/), our subject librarians have developed numerous subject guides, replacing outmoded and outdated Web pages with new guides that have a more appealing format. We have also found that Web guides can be used for projects beyond the traditional library subject guide. One of the best features of the LibGuides software is that it allows our subject librarians to easily repackage information and resources in multiple ways that suit different audiences. In this article, the authors describe how they have used these guides to respond to the needs of their university community and how they hope to expand the potential uses of the Web guides.  相似文献

Usability testing has become a routine way for many libraries to ensure that their Web presence is user-friendly and accessible. At the same time, popular subject guide creation systems, such as LibGuides, decentralize Web content creation and put authorship into the hands of librarians who may not be trained in user-centered design principles. At Metropolitan State University, researchers performed usability testing on LibGuides in order to see how patrons interact with guides. Researchers completed two rounds of usability testing on a total of ten students, one alumnus, and one community patron. The results indicate that patrons struggled most when encountering jargon, inconsistent language, and visual clutter. Based on their findings, researchers recommend ongoing usability testing of subject guides as well as the creation of a style guide to help librarians create usable, accessible guides.  相似文献

Online subject guides are commonly used by libraries to provide information support to students. LibGuides (a cloud-based commercial product launched in 2007) represents one of the latest incarnations of the traditional subject guide or portal, and are widely used across American academic libraries. In Ireland however, library subject guides of entirely local design and hosted on a local web server still dominate. This paper outlines the project management process involved in implementing a LibGuides pilot at University College Dublin Library, including the planning, design and implementation of a new range of subject-related guides. The pilot nature of the project necessitated a strong focus on evaluation, particularly in assessing the effectiveness and suitability of LibGuides as a platform for delivering information literacy support, both from an administrative and end-user perspective. A two-stranded approach was used in this review process, incorporating quantitative web statistics and analytics alongside qualitative feedback from students, academic staff and Library staff.Feedback that was gathered suggested that the LibGuides subject guides were generally viewed very positively by both staff and students. Notwithstanding this, awareness (as indicated through usage statistics) remained moderate during the pilot, pointing to the importance of the visibility, positioning and promotion of guides.  相似文献

Reference librarians at East Tennessee State University's Sherrod Library identified LibGuides as an efficient way to introduce undergraduate students, particularly those in their first two years of college, to the university library. Selecting pertinent library resources based on a course syllabus and creating a LibGuide for the course provides the students with a limited number of relevant materials. Librarians and professors view the use of subject guides attached to a course management system site as an effective educational solution. Librarians facing exponentially expanding resources and first-year students who are used to turning to Google for all their information needs can utilize LibGuides to guide students toward more relevant library resources.  相似文献

The proliferation of research guides created using the LibGuides platform has triggered extensive discussion touting their benefits for everything from assessment, engagement, and marketing, to outreach and pedagogy. However, there is at present a relative paucity of critical reflection about the product’s place in the broader informational landscape. This article is an attempt to redress this lacuna. Relying primarily on examples from the field of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies, the authors briefly describe the evolution of online research guides; identify reasons for the proliferation of Springshare’s product in academic libraries; question whether LibGuides improve learning or reinforce information inequality in higher education; and propose a way to move beyond LibGuides.  相似文献

The literature on health in people who identify as sexual minorities is scattered in many types of resources and disciplines. To help address the need for relevant, well-organized information for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and health care providers, this study first identified books published in a ten-year period and then examined the topics, the number of books published per year, most prolific authors, and primary publishers. A wide range of publishers published a relatively small number of books (521). Most were about mental health or relationships and 24% were personal accounts. There were many subject deficiencies in the published book corpus.  相似文献

Database lists, frequently presented on Databases A to Z and subject pages, are a long-standing component of a library’s web presence. Tools for producing and managing the list are frequently a part of a more comprehensive library technology, such as electronic resource management (ERM) systems, integrated library system-ERMS, and content management systems such as LibGuides. Published literature provides good coverage of these technologies, but pays little attention to functionality for database list management. This article illustrates A to Z database list evolution from 1999 to 2017 by way of manifestations at the University of Central Florida Library, conceptualizes database list systems and functions, presents findings from a survey, and shares tips and practical considerations for producing and managing database lists.  相似文献

Objectives:Current literature recommends online research guides as an easy and effective tool to promote LGBTQ+ health information to both health care providers and the public. This cross-sectional study was designed to determine how extensive LGBTQ+ health guides are among hospital and academic libraries and which features are most prevalent. Methods:In order to locate LGBTQ+ health guides for content analysis, we searched for guides on the websites of libraries belonging to the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) and the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL). Additionally, we searched the Springshare interface for LibGuides with the word “health” and either “LGBT” or “transgender.” Content analysis was performed to identify major characteristics of the located guides, including target audience and the information type provided. Results:LGBTQ+ research guides were identified for 74 libraries. Of these, 5 were hospital libraries, and the rest were academic libraries. Of 158 AAHSL member libraries, 48 (30.4%) had LGBTQ+ guides on their websites. Nearly all guides (95.9%) provided general LGBTQ+ health information, and a large majority (87.8%) also had information resources for transgender health. Smaller percentages of guides contained information on HIV/AIDS (48.6%) and women''s health (16.2%).Conclusions:Even though literature recommends creating LGBTQ+ health guides, most health sciences libraries are missing an opportunity by not developing and maintaining these guides. Further research may be needed to determine the usage and usefulness of existing guides and to better identify barriers preventing libraries from creating guides.  相似文献

Widely varying recommended reading lists for psychiatry residents were obtained from 140 AMA-approved training programs. Approximately 4,000 articles, 2,800 books, and 200 serials were listed. The number of recommendations for each book was counted, and a rank-order determined. A second rank-order was determined from the lists of those eighty-seven programs which indicated that their material covered the "basic" literature; a third rank-order was determined from the number of residents using the lists. All rank-orders agreed on the "most recommended" book and the first eighteen books; there was a 92 percent correlation through the first 453 books. One-third of the "basic" recommendations were for the first 104 books; one-third for the next 349 books, and one-third for the remaining 1,994 books. The subject matter of the first 104 books indicated that the currently most popular subjects in psychiatry are psychoanalytic theories of personality, schizophrenia, psychotherapy, and child psychiatry. A list of the 104 most recommended books is appended.  相似文献

The Americans with Disabilities Act created regulations for the accessibility of buildings and services for individuals with disabilities, but libraries still have a deficit in information highlighting disability and accessibility. Using LibGuides 2.0 software, the authors created 22 accessible guides on disabilities, disability theory, and assistive technology. The initial response from users was positive and included feedback as the guides continue to be improved and built upon. This article is a case study on the creation of the guides from a disability and accessibility standpoint.  相似文献

Contemporary little magazines present difficulties for the serials librarian attempting to collect them; many of these problems stem from the nature of the little magazine itself-independent, transient, personal, frequently short-lived. Because the editor of the little magazine publishes his journal as he sees fit, problems for the librarian are likely to persist, although such problems can be eased somewhat if the librarian ( I ) uses the resource materials about the little magazine which are presently available; (2) gains a sympathetic understanding of the nature and spirit of the little magazine; and (3) clearly defines his conception of the little magazine collection he wishes to gather. A list of resources, a recommended reading list, and an idiosyncratic list of essential little magazines are included as guides for the librarian.  相似文献

Academic medical librarians responsible for monograph acquisition face a challenging task. From the plethora of medical monographs published each year, academic medical librarians must select those most useful to their patrons. Unfortunately, none of the selection tools available to medical librarians are specifically intended to assist academic librarians with medical monograph selection. The few short core collection lists that are available are intended for use in the small hospital or internal medicine department library. As these are the only selection tools available, however, many academic medical librarians spend considerable time reviewing these collection lists and place heavy emphasis on the acquisition of listed books. The study reported here was initiated to determine whether the circulation of listed books in an academic library justified the emphasis placed on the acquisition of these books. Circulation statistics for "listed" and "nonlisted" books in the hematology (WH) section of Indiana University School of Medicine's Ruth Lilly Medical Library were studied. The average circulation figures for listed books were nearly two times as high as the corresponding figures for the WH books in general. These data support the policies of those academic medical libraries that place a high priority on collection of listed books.  相似文献

In this era of intense competition in medicine, it is essential for health sciences librarians to keep abreast of the new and varied socioeconomic influences in the medical environment. A list of socioeconomic resources is provided to help meet this objective. A citation analysis of the Socioeconomic Bibliographic Information (SIB) database was used as a selection criterion. An annotated list of ninety journals, newspapers, and newsletters is included, which provides title of publication, publisher, cost, index information, and special characteristics. In addition, publishers and associations that provide socioeconomic information are listed, and an annotated list of standard statistical resource books is given.  相似文献

This study investigates whether the platform used to deliver a tutorial matters in online information literacy instruction and assesses the overall quality of an information literacy tutorial assignment given to an undergraduate survey class. The study asks whether there is any pedagogical advantage between information literacy tutorials created in the LibGuides library guide creation software and tutorials created as Web pages. This research question is relevant to current studies of online information literacy tutorials, particularly given the increasingly dominant but under-researched position of LibGuides in the academic library world for delivering guides and tutorials. Two separate groups of students completed LibGuides and Web page versions of the same information literacy tutorial assignment in a university undergraduate communication course. Survey results of these 89 students indicated that both the LibGuides and Web page platforms deliver online instruction content effectively and achieve learning objectives almost equally well. Results also indicated content areas within the assignment that could be strengthened.  相似文献
