The field of media economics has mushroomed recently, highlighted by the introduction of the Journal of Media Economics, an expanding literature base, and wider interest among academicians. In this article, I examine the main research paradigms, issues facing the field, and contributions to the larger body of mass communication theory. I also argue that media economics has made at least 4 major contributions to the communication literature. It (a) provides a means to understand media as economic institutions; (b) helps further understanding of continual globalization of media industries; (c) provides a diverse alternative to mainstream mass media; and (d) offers an interdisciplinary focus to contemporary mass communications research. 相似文献

Media companies are different from manufactures and other commercial organizations. They have both measurable economic goals and nonmeasurable social responsibilities. Leading these companies is a difficult task. The main issue is that an appropriate leadership style for media people must balance business and political goals. In this study, semi-structured interviews were used to collect data about Greek media leaders. The research explores and identifies the leadership style of CEOs heading the top media companies in Greece. These findings indicate that media leaders use a mixed leadership style involving both transformational and transactional styles in order to anticipate the peculiar external and internal media environment. 相似文献

西方信息社会的传播权利运动的兴起带动了传播学界"媒介治理"的研究热潮。通过社会人类学的"功能-符号"路径,媒介治理关注了传播的信息界面、产业界面、符号界面和关系界面,综合了传播系统的界内研究和界外研究,代表了一种新的传播研究范式。作为跨学科的交叉研究,"媒介治理"在研究取向上呈现出学科的交叉性:深层生态学路径、公共选择路径、协商民主路径是研究"媒介治理"的基本路径。媒介治理的研究是一种"灰色系统"的信息论,是第三种文化思维范式的代表。媒介治理理论研究尚处于起步阶段,需要进一步提供具有解释力的基本假设,实现叙事的连贯性和必要的逻辑建构。 相似文献

This article re‐examines the economics of publishing scholarly journals and illustrates the dilemma of publisher identity and publication format with a case study of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's Media Management and Economics division. The study investigates the perceived interest and demand for a society‐published journal for the field of media management and economics and the preferred format for that journal – print or online. Results showed a divided opinion on the support of a society‐published journal and no consideration of the benefits or harms of journal publishing to the society. The print journal, though a desirable format for authors, is deemed uneconomical. The online journal is viewed as a feasible publication outlet, but its status as a prestigious journal is doubtful. Applications of scholarly journal publishing and economic models to the case are discussed. 相似文献

This article introduces a collection of original papers and research project reports considering the history of the BBC foreign-language services prior to, and during, the Second World War. The communication between the British government and foreign publics by way of mass media constituted a fundamental, if often ignored, aspect of Britain's international relations. From the 1930s onwards, transnational broadcasting, that is, broadcasting across national borders, became a major element in the conduct of Britain's diplomacy, and the BBC was employed by the government to further its diplomatic, strategic and economic interests in times of rising international tension and conflict. A review of the literature on the BBC's foreign-language broadcasts sets the stage for the presentation of the articles that compose this special issue of Media History. 相似文献

A belief about the need for media economics research was expressed in Poland over 100 years ago by Karol Estreicher (1867), who studied the economics of newspaper enterprises. Unfortunately, despite the creation of media research centers (and media departments at universities), work in the area did not continue. Aside from the articles of Kafel (1969), Tetelowska and Szewczyk (1969), and Maciaszek (1962), the field of media economics in Poland is rather deserted. Kafel, as well as Maciaszek, proposed to concentrate research on newspaper enterprises. Tetelowska and Szewczyk were mostly interested in the 'economics of newspaper information' (p. 25). Even a discussion about a definition and the scope of interest in media economics was largely ignored. In opposition to the research concept of media economics as one integrated field of research (Kowalski, 1980), Bywalec (1980) proposed to divide newspaper economics into four parts: general theory of newspaper economics, economics of production, economics of consumption, and economics of distribution. 相似文献

Mental health is a stigmatized issue in many parts of the world. We conducted a survey of Chinese adults (n?=?661) to examine predictors of intentions to seek information related to mental health. Attitudes and subjective norms positively influenced intentions to seek mental health information, with subjective norms being a stronger predictor. Cultural identity was negatively associated with intentions to seek mental health information, with participants who held a stronger cultural identity being less likely to seek information related to mental health. Media use was positively associated with intentions to seek information. This research highlights that cultural identity may influence mental health information seeking, and that health campaigns could focus more on influencing subjective norms, thereby changing the seeking intention of Chinese adults regarding mental health information. Additionally, practitioners may want to explore possible ways of providing health information to people with strong cultural identity, as they may be less likely to seek out information on their own. 相似文献
