Little research has explored how exactly information processes relate to their context. Context is defined as all those things which are not an inherent part of information phenomena, but which nevertheless bear some relation to these. This article addresses the issue by discussing empirical findings from a study on Internet searching and personal development. The purpose of the article is to construct a general typology for researching the links between information seeking and its context. Grounded analysis of the whole corpus revealed 11 different relationships between Internet searching and the goals of personal development. Because these seem to be quite generalizable to information seeking in other contexts (e.g., parenting or location), too, they were then abstracted into four generic relationships: detachment, unity, direction, and interaction. The classifications are offered as tools for understanding information seeking more contextually and for conducting further research in this area. 相似文献

Using data collected from students at a fully networked university community, this study examines patterns of World Wide Web use and how they may relate to gratifications people seek from traditional media. Path analyses show that beliefs about the Web predict gratifications sought, and that the latter predict gratifications obtained, with considerable reliability. More importantly, entertainment, surveillance, and passing time—gratifications typically associated with television and newspaper use—prove to be significant predictors of World Wide Web site visitation. Thus, the data indicate that Internet use may be understood and predicted through the application of traditional gratification typologies. 相似文献

This research sought answers to twoimportant questions regarding the impact of theInternet on three New Zealand cultural institutions:the National Archives, the National Library and theMuseum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. First, whatimpact has the Internet had on policy development ineach institution? Second, what are the attitudes ofthe professional staff toward the integration of theInternet into the workplace? The findings are comparedto determine the extent to which the experiences ofintegrating the Internet into each institution's corebusiness are similar and different. The resultsrevealed several important findings: 1. policyregarding the Internet has been most extensivelydeveloped at the National Library; 2. the Internet isnot currently as central to the delivery of coreservices at the National Archives or the Museum of NewZealand Te Papa Tongarewa as it is at the NationalLibrary; 3. the majority of the professional staff atall three institutions responded that they were either`very positive' or `somewhat positive' about theintegration of the Internet into their environment,although most felt that their core professional dutieswere not being fundamentally altered. Due in large part to the interdisciplinary nature of the profession, Home Economics reference collections are often difficult to develop, maintain, and assess. Collection development responsibilities are usually divided among several librarians across the broad spectrum of the social sciences, humanities, and applies sciences. To help ensure basic and balanced collections, a "core" bibliography of home economics reference sources is provided. The included works are listed alphabetically under the broad categories of "Indexes and Abstracts," "Dictionaries and Encyclopedias," and "Handbooks and Sourcebooks." This bibliography should be used as a starting framework for a basic home economics reference collection. The popular economics genre has become a promising tool for the development of information literacy and critical thinking skills in relation to the fundamental principles of economics to undergraduates. This article discusses how a popular economics collection can support faculty teaching economics classes. A bibliographic discussion describes trends in this genre and demonstrates how a few representative examples of this genre may enhance a traditional economics curriculum. Recommendations for librarians supporting economics teaching faculty are discussed. Behavioral economics, a blend of cognitive psychology and economics, is a new field that has attracted much attention, both from economists and from the general public. Behavioral economists have won Nobel Prizes and written books that became New York Times bestsellers. Unlike traditional economists, whose models are based on a perfect “rational man,” behavioral economists study ways that people actually make decisions and incorporate those findings into economic theory. This case study shares the experience of building an in-house faculty publications database that was spearheaded by the Touro College and University System library in 2010. The project began with the intention of contributing to the college by collecting the research accomplishments of our faculty and staff, thereby also increasing library visibility and faculty interaction. Since then the project has grown immensely and has gained momentum throughout the college. With the endorsement of the Office of the President, the library has started publishing an annual book with the bibliography of its faculty publications.
