Like other recent library management systems, OCLC's WorldShare Management Services (WMS) is cloud-based. But unlike the others, WMS opens WorldCat for applications beyond its traditional role as a source of bibliographic records. It enables catalogers to work directly from the Master Record, which no longer needs to be exported to a local system. This article describes the impact of WMS on the roles and functions of cataloging departments, and asks if it is changing the meaning of cataloging. It concludes that while the workflows are changed dramatically, the profession of cataloging remains relevant. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) has aroused controversy by promoting the value of cataloger judgement in its BIBCO program. Because this issue at times eclipses broader discussions about the PCC, it is useful to revisit some long-term values and issues in cooperative cataloging to gain a better understanding of the Program. The PCC is attempting to find realistic approaches to the issues of cost effectiveness and local flexibility while continuing to address the professional values that have historically motivated cooperative cataloging. Participating in the PCC can allow catalogers to reconcile their professional goals with the financial realities of their local institutions. 相似文献

This paper, one of a pair that examines the library and information science (LIS) literature of the 1990s to identify the role of catalogers in the 21st century, discusses three contextual issues that are likely to affect the cataloging enterprise: 1) the image of catalogers, 2) the ownership vs. access debate, and 3) financial pressures on libraries. Kent State University Libraries’ electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) cataloging process features contributions by authors, by the ETDcat application, and by catalogers. Who is doing what, and how much of it is findable in the library catalog? An empirical analysis is performed featuring simple frequencies within the KentLINK catalog, articulated by the use of a newly devised rubric. The researchers sought the degree to which the ETD authors, the applications, and the catalogers can supply accurate, findable metadata. Further development of combinatory cataloging processes is suggested. The method of examining the data and the rubric are provided as a framework for other metadata analysis. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Catalogers have been reporting the ways they use the Internet for several years, but as yet there has been little evaluation done to determine for which areas of cataloging the Internet is a valuable tool and for which areas it is not as useful. A survey was conducted in an effort to elicit this information. The responses indicated four areas in which catalogers use the Internet: searching the OPACs of other libraries, communicating with colleagues, accessing online cataloging documentation and publications, and authority work. Some catalogers also related processes for which they have found the Internet to not be efficient. 相似文献

Cataloging procedures have evolved in many academic research libraries over the past 10 years. Some predicted trends—outsourcing, original cataloging by paraprofessionals, more digital material—have been borne out. Others, such as a decline in the amount of material to catalog or in the number of professional catalogers, have not. Changes have been mostly procedural and have not affected the catalog itself. Recently, however, the emergence of powerful Internet search engines has allowed researchers to bypass the catalog. This has led some to question the wisdom of continuing it and others to vigorously defend current practice. In 2005–2007 this debate became especially heated, but a consensus appears to be emerging that although the character of the professional cataloger's job will continue to evolve over the next 5 to 10 years there will not be a revolution. The cataloger's basic skills will still be needed and the fundamental nature of cataloging will remain much as we know it. 相似文献
