Increasingly, libraries of all types and sizes are adding electronic book (ebook) titles to their collections. A survey was used to explore the implications of ebook licensing and interlibrary loan use. Among academic libraries in the United States, a widespread preference for handling print books was found along with a need for more information about ebook interlibrary loan rights at one's own institution and a means to identify format type available from potential lending libraries.  相似文献

Since its inception in 2007, Springshare's LibGuides has become a popular content management system (CMS) with academic libraries. The challenges of managing LibGuides content through a cohesive content strategy have not been well documented. The researchers conducted a survey of academic libraries that were using the LibGuides platform in Fall 2019 to determine how institutions are managing content challenges. Of 120 respondents, only 53% of the respondents indicated that their institutions had content guidelines that LibGuides authors were expected to follow. The top three most observed elements of these content guidelines were page design (80%), content reuse policies (77%), naming conventions (73%), and navigation (3%). 15% of respondents' institutions did not review guides once they were published. Of those that reviewed guides post-publication, authors (84%) most frequently reviewed their own guides. These findings imply that LibGuides are largely cared for on an honour system. Guidelines tend towards quantifiable elements and omit more abstract concepts.  相似文献

When a scholarly monograph is made available in both print and electronic formats, which format will users prefer? This study analyzed monograph usage data from three university presses in the University of Toronto Libraries' collections, comparing print and ebook usage patterns of identical titles. The goal was to examine format preferences and determine whether there are differences in usage across subject disciplines or publishers. The study showed that although in many cases users preferred one format over another, they used books in both formats. If a subject was popular, usage tended to be high for both formats, and if unpopular, low for both formats. The data also indicated that there were some noticeable differences in ebook usage for particular subjects, and the authors concluded that format does matter and therefore it is desirable for libraries to provide both formats if possible. The study also highlighted how critical metadata are in promoting the use of electronic resources. If there were no ebook metadata within the library catalog, the ebook usage was low. This analysis adds to a growing body of literature in user preferences on book formats that can assist libraries in making better-informed decisions in collection building.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The study examines how Loansome Doc services are implemented and used by libraries in the Southeast Region and describe end users' experiences with and attitudes toward Loansome Doc. METHODS: 251 active DOCLINE libraries and 867 Loansome Doc users were surveyed. RESULTS: Roughly one half of the libraries offered Loansome Doc services. Of those that did not, most indicated no plans to offer it in the future. The majority had a small number of end users and experienced minimal increases in interlibrary loan activity. Problems were relatively rare. Satisfaction with Loansome Doc was high among all types of libraries. End users were usually physicians or other health care professionals who requested articles for research and patient care. Most learned about Loansome Doc through PubMed or Internet Grateful Med. End users appeared to be largely self-taught or received informal instruction in Loansome Doc. Loansome Doc filled document requests in a timely manner, and end users reported being satisfied with the service. CONCLUSIONS: Greater promotion of what Loansome Doc is and how it can benefit libraries can increase the number of participating libraries. While satisfaction of Loansome Doc end users is high, satisfaction could be increased with more help on the PubMed screen, more library training, and faster delivery methods.  相似文献

Six factual queries were unobtrusively telephoned to fifty-one U.S. academic health sciences and hospital libraries. The majority of the queries (63.4%) were answered accurately. Referrals to another library or information source were made for 25.2% of the queries. Eleven answers (3.6%) were inaccurate, and no answer was provided for 7.8% of the queries. There was a correlation between the number of accurate answers provided and the presence of at least one staff member with a master's degree in library and information science. The correlation between employing a librarian certified by the Medical Library Association (MLA) and providing accurate answers was significant. The majority of referrals were to specific sources. If these "helpful referrals" are counted with accurate answers as correct responses, they total 76.8% of the answers. In a follow-up survey, five libraries stated that they did not provide accurate answers because they did not own an appropriate source. Staff-related problems were given as reasons for other than accurate answers by two of the libraries, while eight indicated that library policy prevented them from providing answers to the public.  相似文献

The advent of the electronic format has required libraries to regard themselves as information providers instead of format collectors. This analysis discusses how the issue of providing information transcends the traditional task of collecting it within an environment based on a work-oriented approach. Background:Prior to 2020, library orientation for first-year medical students at Weill Cornell Medicine took the form of an on-site treasure hunt competition. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the orientation for the MD class of 2024 was shifted to an all-virtual format. This shift mandated a full redesign of the library orientation.Case Presentation:The Samuel J. Wood Library sought to preserve the excitement and fun of the treasure hunt in the new virtual format. The competition was redesigned as a Zoom meeting using breakout rooms, with library faculty and staff serving as team facilitators. Tasks were rewritten, shifting the focus from the library''s physical spaces to its virtual services and online resources. The redesigned orientation was evaluated using two data sources: a postsession survey of student participants and a debriefing of the library employees who participated. Student evaluations were positive, while the faculty and staff provided numerous suggestions for improving future virtual orientations.Conclusions:A successful virtual library orientation requires careful preparation, including testing the competition tasks, full rehearsal with library facilitators, and a thoughtful approach to technology and logistics. We have chosen to share the materials we developed for other academic health sciences libraries that may wish to take a similar approach to their own virtual orientations.  相似文献

Library‐led publishing is one of the new approaches to journal publishing and open access that has grown tremendously in the last few years. A 2010 IMLS‐funded survey found that 55% of respondents – from US academic libraries of all different types and sizes – were already implementing or developing a publishing program. Library‐led publishing has garnered such momentum because, by offering low‐ or no‐cost publishing to university scholars, it addresses needs that traditional publishing has not been able to meet. This article presents a series of small case studies to illustrate different journals that have benefited from the library‐publishing model: (i) a journal that struggled to find an affordable publisher in its emerging field; (ii) a small society journal that could no longer afford to support itself in print; (iii) society publications that go beyond the traditional journal format; and (iv) a student journal with a revolving editorial board.  相似文献

This study examines the relationship between the reviewing media and classical music recording collections in libraries in order to determine if reviews are an important selection tool for these collections. As previous studies have shown that there is a correlation between the number of reviews a work receives and the number of libraries owning that work, it is hypothesized that this relationship holds true for classical music recordings. A second hypothesis is that a correlation exists between the nature of the reviews, positive or negative, a recording receives and its ownership by libraries. The number and direction of a random sample of two hundred classical recordings released in 1989 is tallied from the review index in MLA Notes, as is the number of OCLC libraries owning each item. These data suggest that there is no correlation between the number of reviews a work receives and the number of libraries owning that work, nor between the number of positive reviews a work receives and its ownership by libraries. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed, and further questions are raised.  相似文献

Analysis of a survey of the types and extent of tools and techniques related to semi-automatic metadata generation applied in real-world library settings indicates that practical applications in libraries seem to be at an incipient stage. More than half (n  = 149, 52.5%) of the survey participants (n  = 285) specify that semi-automatic metadata generation has not been utilized for metadata creation and management in their libraries. This figure becomes even higher when adding the response “don't know,” constituting an additional 13.7%. The results of the survey also show that the semi-automatic metadata generation tools described by participants mostly concern metadata format conversion (38.6%) and metadata templates and forms (27%) for populating certain metadata values. Complex tools and the generation and extraction of metadata directly from the content and context of the digital objects are rarely applied in libraries. This indicates that more research is needed on the development of automatic metadata generation for semantic metadata in usable and practical settings.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine librarians' perceptions of knowledge management, including its concept, potential applications, benefits and major challenges of its applications in Indian academic libraries. A structured questionnaire, containing both open and close-ended questions, was sent by postal mail to 30 librarians of academic libraries in India of which 15 questionnaires were returned. Respondents were asked to define knowledge management and answer questions on its potential applications, benefits and major challenges of implementation in academic libraries. Respondents were also allowed to specify their own views on the subject. The findings of the study show that the levels of understanding of KM concepts among librarians are varied and most of them view KM as the management of information resources, services and systems using technology or specific processes for the capture and use of explicit knowledge, rather sharing and using tacit knowledge. They have positive attitudes towards the applications of knowledge management into academic library practice, and not only because this can bring academic libraries closer to their parent organization, but also because it may help them to survive in an increasingly challenging environment. Although, librarians in the present study acknowledged that they are involved in the practices of knowledge management but these were perceived as basic information management activities. Lack of understanding of knowledge management concepts and its benefits, knowledge sharing culture, top management commitment, incentives and rewards, financial resources and information technology infrastructure are perceived as the major barriers for incorporating knowledge management into academic library practice.  相似文献

In formulating collection development statements for music score collections, a combination of the structural elements outlined in the RTSD Guidelines for Collection Development together with the terminology and format of the RLG Conspectus is recommended, in part to facilitate cooperative resource sharing activities. Criteria for score selection are discussed, and ways of incorporating selection criteria not provided for in the Conspectus are presented. Although the observations and recommendations are made in terms of academic collections, the criteria and formal elements are applicable to collections in public libraries as well.  相似文献

介绍和分析美国明尼苏达州的Minitex馆际借阅系统30年来的发展历史。该系统的独特之处在于:将明尼苏达州、南达科他州、北达科他州的200多家图书馆连成为一体,利用各参与图书馆的资源为三州的学者、公众、政府机构和专业图书馆提供馆际借阅、文献传递、集团采购等服务。这一图书馆网络不仅使得所有参与图书馆的馆藏得到了更充分的利用,而且为资源相对有限的中小型图书馆提供了更强大的服务能力。Minitex模式对国土大、人口多、图书资源紧缺的国家和地区如中国来说特别具有启示意义。  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Global outlook on library visitorship and loans point to a downward trend in physical visits and loans, whilst digital visits and loans are trending up. Singapore’s network of public libraries has not been spared and has been experiencing the same phenomenon of either declining or slow growth in visitorship and loans in the recent years. An inaugural nation-wide population study was launched in 2016 to comprehensively understand the state of reading in Singapore, reading motivation, and barriers to reading, lifestyle mapping, media technology habits, and Information- and knowledge-seeking habits. This article focuses on Singaporeans’ reading habits in physical and digital format. The findings shed light on ways Singapore libraries can attract the general public to make use of library content and services and can regain market share and remain relevant in the longer run.  相似文献

通俗图书馆是民国初期广泛设立的文化教育机构。当时,日本社会教育的影响及国内教育改革、财政状况的现实需要使得通俗图书馆成为国内一种社会教育事业。教育主管部门把通俗图书馆作为社会教育的重要设施进行制度设计,通俗图书馆不仅在教育行政制度上有保障,而且其自身的制度建设也不断完善。针对普通民众的借阅活动集中体现了通俗图书馆的“通俗”特色,这与社会教育的理念与要求正相符合。  相似文献
