现代意义上的博士学位诞生于18世纪初的德国柏林大学,自那时起博士论文就成为获得博士学位的必要条件,原创性知识贡献是评判论文质量的首要标准,这种以博士论文为主要评价标准的博士生教育却面临众多质疑.首先,博士生教育的目的已经由培养学术精英转而培养知识工人,博士论文由原创性知识贡献的载体转向一种研究能力或职业技能训练的工具.其次,由于原创性概念自身的模糊性,具体指标呈现泛化的趋势,对于博士论文的评价已由过往对于知识发现的推崇转为更看重知识的应用和拓展;而理想的定义与现实的评价存在较大偏差,导师和同行评审专家也不再将原创性作为评判论文质量的主要标准;同时,不同学科对原创性的理解也存在不可通约性.再次,博士论文形式的多样性迎合了大学文化、学科传统和学位类型多元化的趋势,但可能也损害了博士学位代表最高学术水平的文凭信号功能.这些实践或技术层面变革的背后是博士生教育理念及其知识价值的嬗变,更进一步说是高校、国家和市场等力量的相互博弈. 相似文献

Online web tools are becoming an important and accessible means of supporting learning in higher education. Student writing is central to teaching and learning ( Lillis, 2001 ). This paper describes an online tool designed to support dissertation writing. By combining three types of online space—instructional material, a writing space and planning templates—this tool aimed to provide a holistic approach to writing and writing development. This paper demonstrates how the tool was used in an academic course in order to address certain teaching and learning problems identified by the course tutor. Student feedback suggests that while further development is needed, the tool was still useful. This paper raises awareness of the complex array of issues involved in dissertation writing and provides insights into solutions to writing problems. While we designed what we considered to be a web‐based tool for dissertation writing, we argue that the writing space and planning templates go some way towards creating an environment for the development of learning ( Häkkinen, 2002 ). 相似文献

This article reports on aspects of a recent research and development project in doctoral education. It focuses on the use of email for tutor’s formative assessment within the early stages of a Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) in an English university. Its case study methodology included participant observation of the programme workshops, critical discourse analysis of the email texts, and two series of in‐depth, semi‐structured student interviews. The tutor whose feedback was analysed had previously researched and theorised formative assessment, so the research allowed his previous theoretical insights to be explored and developed in an early doctoral context. The article concludes by discussing the problematic power of feedback at this level, given the culturally constructed associations of feedback with summative assessment, and implications for supervisory practice. 相似文献

This article explores the role of publication in taking forward the work of the doctorate. Low publication rates from doctoral degrees have been noted as a problem in the quality of doctoral education for preparing students to participate in research cultures. At the same time there is ambivalence and some resistance among doctoral supervisors and candidates about the place of publication in doctoral work. This article argues that issues of writing and publication need to be systematically addressed within doctoral pedagogy. In a climate of increasing pressure to publish during and after candidature, pedagogies need to take up a more explicitly outward-looking stance, developing a stronger orientation to induction and participation in the world of peer-reviewed publication. These arguments are developed through two case studies that illustrate ways of supporting doctoral researchers to effectively recontextualise their dissertation writing for wider audiences. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThe first time of many significant encounters is the most intense, raising awkwardness, anxiety and hope. This article presents data from doctoral students (n?=?80) who described the first time that they submitted writing to their supervisor and received feedback. The first writing/feedback exchange is an initiation into the cultures of academia. Student accounts captured the intensity of the initiation for students, excitement or dread on submitting writing, with increased emotional reaction when going through the feedback process, that liminal first time. Close focus on the first-time writing feedback exchange makes a contribution to the literature on the social interactions of doctoral writing. Data backs our argument that students and supervisors need to carefully manage the first-time exchange of writing. Our findings are analysed thematically and through an autoethnographic lens of the lead author, who was both a research assistant for the research survey and an international doctoral student experiencing the same processes in his cross-disciplinary joint doctorate. This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages which a prolonged period at a foreign university, as part of his or her research training, offers the doctoral student. Despite increased interest in student mobility at the postgraduate level, little research on actual experiences of sojourns abroad among doctoral students has been conducted. The study shows that in general benefits far outweigh the problems related to such stays. Help with dissertation work, development of general research qualifications, and personal development are regarded as the most valuable experiences; whilst delays in work on a thesis, poor contact with professors at foreign institutions, and family and social problems seem to be the principal difficulties. A number of issues seem to inhibit the extension of foreign doctoral training among Nordic postgraduates: tensions and dilemmas within the research training programme, lack of time and funding, lack of motivation and internal support, nationally oriented theses, and family obligations. The study concludes that this kind of mobility is one means, albeit an important one, of enhancing the quality of doctoral training and stimulating young scholars' professional development. 相似文献

从社会生活史角度,以哥伦比亚大学师范学院第一位中国博士学位获得者、郭秉文的原始档案及相关研究为史料,对其在师范学院学习期间（191l1914）进行历史探究。结果发现：（一）郭秉文选择师范学院的动机出自“教育改革的力量”,其学业成绩为中等略偏下,修业期限低于其后中国学生（博士）平均值;（二）郭秉文硕士、博士学位论文主题均为中国教育,博士论文选题教育史与其时师范学院整体博士论文选题相关,旨趣希望为英语语系人们介绍繁复的、不同时代中国教育制度的演进;（三）郭秉文在师范学院期间参与了大量社团活动,其娴熟的人际交往能力得到广泛认可,留美中国学生总会第一任主席及Phi Beta Kappa成员等均为明确表征,为其存留美中国学生群体中积累了深广人脉。该研究通过大量史料分析,为学界之前“师范学院对郭秉文一生事业影响巨大”结论找到了实证,修正并补充了郭秉文研究及师范学院中国学生群体研究的学源谱系。 相似文献
