Projects in undergraduate research programs differ from assignments in courses in that they are independent of an institution's curriculum, and faculty mentoring plays a more important role. These programs can be fertile ground for librarians interested in participating. Whether such librarians would make good mentors for undergraduate researchers depends largely on their experience and education. Texas Tech University has two of these programs, but library support for them has been sporadic. The time is overdue for librarians involved in campus outreach and instruction to examine how they can best support Texas Tech's undergraduate research activities, and, in particular, whether they are adequately prepared to provide effective mentoring to undergraduate research students. Services to preschoolers in public libraries in Texas are offered by the majority of the libraries (87.4%), but the offerings are, for the most part, recent developments, with 62.1% in existence for less than 20 years, and 44.7% in existence for less than 10 years. The services are supported by very small allocations from library budgets (the majority allocated less than 2% of the library budget), and are staffed by primarily nonprofessionals (79.2%) without struc- tured professional education in either librarianship or early child- hood concerns.  相似文献

Inspired by the "Year of the Trustee" celebration, the article reviews educational opportunities afforded trusteei during the last decade or so in one state, Alabama, and offers suggestions for those planning educational activities at the local, state, or regional level. Conferences and workshops conducted for Alabama trustees by the state library agency (APLS) during the 1980s am discussed briefly, results of a survey of Alabama trustee's continuing education preferences am reported, and programs presented for trustees by the Alabama Library Association and the Southeastern Library Association during this period am listed as suggestions for program planners. After offering specific advice for those planning continuing education workshops, the article reports on workshops, videotapes, and speakers' kits available from ALTA, the American Library Trustee Association.  相似文献

认为图书馆理事能够强化凝聚力与向心力、推动工作贯彻落实、提升社会影响力。美国图书馆界对图书馆理事应当履行的职责与义务做出了明确规定,并以纽约州为例,指出图书馆理事应当受到公共图书馆治理法案、教育法案、“公共”机构涉及法案、理事会工作涉及规定、任职图书馆机构出台政策以及职业道德的规范与制约。美国图书馆协会下的图书馆联合协会、纽约州层面的图书馆理事协会及纽约图书馆理事网站为图书馆理事的职业发展提供了交流、培训的平台。以此为借鉴,中国公共图书馆理事会制度的实践探索不应忽视图书馆理事这一特殊队伍群体的建设发展。  相似文献

The level of electoral mobilization, which is generally lowerin European elections as compared to first-order national elections,has been found to be lower among party adherents as well. Variationin the capability of political parties to mobilize their adherentsis mainly explained by the coincidence or not of European and(first-order) national elections (and of compulsory voting).Parties in government do not, as could have been expected onthe basis of earlier research, considerably worse in mobilizingtheir support, they did significantly better in the 1989 Europeanelections. And big parties were not found to be disadvantagedin getting their adherents to the European ballots—theydid equally well or even better than their smaller competitors.However, it is to be observed that big parties competing inEuropean elections cannot profit from the tremendous mobilizationaladvantages they have in first-order national elections. Andtheir adherents are, in European elections and in relative terms,more vulnerable to mobilizing appeals of competing parties thanthose of smaller parties.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

What happens when libraries begin to use ILL to request items that they already own in their home collection? The goal of this multiyear study involving 9565 ILL requests to the Joint Library Facility in Bryan, Texas, is to examine whether or not the shared storage facility was becoming an ILL hub for some libraries. This paper reports the results of the study and how individual requesting and lending interlibrary loan policies and procedures might be altered to address these developing issues.  相似文献

Scholarly journals, especially in non‐English‐speaking countries, may perform very different functions depending on whether they are published for national or international audiences. Four hundred and sixty‐six academic physicians and non‐academic general practitioners in Croatia were surveyed on their knowledge about two Croatian medical journals: Lije?ni?ki vjesnik (published in Croatian) and Croatian Medical Journal (published in English). The physicians were also surveyed about the importance of all national and international journals published in Croatia, and the types of articles they thought should be published in these journals. More respondents rated national (n = 329, 72.6%) than international journals (n = 275, 63.5%, P < 0.001, Wilcoxon test) as very important for the medical profession. On the other hand, publishing in international journals was more often rated as important than publishing in national journals (n = 184, 42.5% vs. n = 125, 27.8%; P < 0.001, Wilcoxon test). Guidelines for clinical practice were rated as the most important publication item in national journals, and original scientific articles in international journals.  相似文献

This article reports on the results of a national survey of academic librarians and library staff (N = 226) in the United States about their awareness of various copyright policies, partnerships with campus groups to address copyright issues, and training needs. A majority of the survey respondents reported that they have answered copyright-related questions in the workplace, yet only 49% (n = 98) of the respondents perceived they were prepared to provide copyright information to library users. Awareness of various copyright policies among librarians and staff members varied, including a reported minimal awareness of the T.E.A.C.H. Act. In addition, survey respondents expressed the desire for more copyright-related training. In light of these findings, the present study extends the existing literature and offers recommendations to help better prepare a “copyright confident” or “copyright responsive” academic library workforce.  相似文献

Texas A&M University Libraries has been hard at work putting the power of course reserves in the hands of its users. Reserves services have traditionally been restrictive, granting only faculty the authority to place items on reserve or allowing students access to items only after they have been checked out. From faculty adding streaming content to their e-reserves to students having hands-on access to their course reserves, this article tells the story of how an academic library system is allowing its patrons to “do-it-themselves.”  相似文献

Free newspapers are a substantial segment of the U.S. newspaper industry, as well as an under-studied topic within media research. This study considers the economic health of free newspapers in the United States and whether they face a dire future given their heavy reliance on advertising, a source of revenue that has been in decline for newspapers. One question guiding this research is whether free newspapers face two options: continue producing free content by relying on advertising (in addition to other revenue sources), or abandon the advertising-based business model. Seven research questions address a number of issues, such as whether free newspapers are profitable, if decision-makers are considering changing their business model, whether they are seeking alternative sources of revenue, whether reader engagement is connected to the price, or a lack of one, of a newspaper, and whether decision-makers are optimistic or pessimistic about the future of their industry. A Web-based survey asked decision-makers at free newspapers in the United States to respond to questions related to the health and future of their newspaper or newspapers. This survey was complemented by in-depth interviews with publishers of four different types of free newspapers in Texas. The study concludes by suggesting free newspapers are not only viable but in many markets they are thriving. Sweeping generalizations (often seen in industry discourse) about the future of print newspapers can be misleading. This study contributes a reality check and calls for further research on the economics of print media in the digital era.  相似文献

A survey was conducted in Spring 1999 to assess the library support services for distance learning within the Texas A&M University System. Graduate students actively enrolled at remote sites in one or more courses taught on the system's interactive video network were surveyed. Results of this survey provide insight for improving library services.

Theoretically, national bibliographies are regarded as important library resources for a variety of reasons. Internationally accepted standards suggest that such compilations are valued for their currency, comprehensiveness and accuracy; all of these attributes indicate that national bibliographies should be particularly useful in the selection process. However, the reality of their content, especially from Third World countries where bibliographic control generally operates under severe constraints, shows that they are less adequate than expected. This may be in part because we apply unrealistic and unnecessarily complex criteria to their evaluation. If these are simplified and tailored to Third World realities, do national bibliographies fare any better? On the whole they rate below average even according to special criteria and at best are marginally acceptable as selection resources—although some exceptions are apparent.  相似文献

The acquisition of electronic resources presented many new issues for staff at the Texas Tech University Library. Traditional communication pathways between acquisitions and other departments were inadequate to address the increasingly complex questions that were raised in the process of acquiring the electronic resources that were increasingly in demand by the university community. While it was possible to handle decision making for electronic resources through the library’s departmental structure, the process was hampered by a lack of speed and focus. To resolve this problem, six library staff members were brought together to form an electronic resources group (ERG). This cross-functional team is composed of library staff from four different departments, each of whom had experience with different aspects of acquiring electronic resources. Members continue to work within their departments and report to their functional managers, but they also report to the ERG project manager and are expected to contribute substantially to the accomplishment of group goals. This paper describes how Texas Tech has successfully used the cross-functional team approach for managing the acquisition of materials in electronic formats.  相似文献

Objectives: The objective is to study how the staff who purchase health care services for a large national government accident-compensation system seek information on treatment effectiveness, how they assess the quality of that information, whether they question the information sources they choose, and how familiar they are with the key concepts of evidence-based health care (EBHC).Method: Staff (22 out of 34) of the health purchasing division of the New Zealand Accident Compensation Corporation (NZ ACC) were interviewed using eight preformatted questions to which they could provide open and multiple answers. Responses were subsequently codified into typologies for quantitative analysis.Results: Most respondents report that they assess the effectiveness of a treatment by accessing published information (nonhuman sources), by consulting others (human sources), or by both means. They assess the quality of information mostly by consulting others, and the second-highest proportion of responses state that they do not know how to evaluate the quality of information. No clear preference emerges with respect to the types of information needed to determine the effectiveness of treatments. The majority of the staff believes they can access information needed to determine treatment effectiveness through the Internet or information databases such as MEDLINE. Although most said they understand the key concepts of EBHC, only five out of twenty-two were able to accurately describe them.Conclusions: The findings suggest that there is a low level of awareness among the staff of the NZ ACC regarding the use of evidence and understanding of the key concepts of EBHC. Many surveyed staff members lack the skills or training to directly question information about effectiveness of a treatment. They have little idea of the information required to determine the effectiveness of a treatment, and the majority appears to lack the skills to evaluate the health care literature.  相似文献

The National League for Nursing and the American Nurses' Association publish many works that are vital to nursing literature, but their publications are difficult for libraries to handle efficiently and for users to find. This paper discusses the problems involved in making NLNIANA publications accessible to users. A survey was conducted to determine how libraries are handling these publications and whether or not they are satisfied with their methods. Results show that a majority are content with their processing of NLNIANA materials and that these libraries are not using different methods to handle these publications from those who are not satisfied.  相似文献

This article presents data determined from a study made of the major national bibliographies of Western Europe, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand with regard to the information that they provide on periodicals and monographic series. Frequently in acquisitions work the national bibliographies must be consulted for the verification of new periodical titles and for the verification of monographic series and their constituent volumes. For a librarian the recurrent task of verifying these works through the bibliographies can be an arduous one, since the various bibliographies differ greatly in the extent to which they provide data on periodicals and series. Since the main listing and index arrangements of many of the national bibliographies are often complex, and since there are to data no guides available that graphically illustrate these arrangements and indicate what data the bibliographies provide or do not provide on periodicals and series, the author constructed charts to illustrate (a) what data are provided by the bibliographies and (b) how these data may be accessed in the bibliographies, namely, which indexes or main listings should first be consulted. It is hoped that this information will be of value to librarians in their daily work with these important tools.  相似文献

A Canadian national survey of 788 library staff doing instructional work revealed that most participants expected to be doing some teaching in their workplaces, and the largest proportion of participants have been teaching for more than 10 years. Most instruction continues to take the form of short presentations to groups of learners. On the whole, preparatory experiences are informal—on-the-job experience, reading professional literature, and attending workshops. The majority of respondents identify instructional work as integral to their professional identity, but nearly one-third see this work as a duty or expectation, and a small proportion view it as an imposition. The study results have implications for design of programs that prepare library staff for the workplace, and for library managers who need to support effective instructional practice.  相似文献
