Many areas of the country have seen large growth in their Spanish speaking community. Libraries and other public agencies have redesigned their practices to better serve the needs of these new segments of the population. The urban area chosen for this study has experienced one of the fastest growing Spanish speaking populations in the country in the last 10 years. In this study, a needs assessment was created for the Spanish speaking population served by a branch library in a large, urban area. The needs assessment was created with the use of demographic data and an analysis of current library literature. Using the assessment, the current Spanish nonfiction collection of the library was evaluated for both size and content and then compared to the size and content of the English nonfiction collection. This assessment technique is useful to libraries wishing to conduct a needs analysis on a specific group in their population served. 相似文献

Unless librarians work with the schools, though, we do not truly complement the curriculum. The Newark (NJ) Public Schools and the Newark Public Library have therefore embarked on a program of library orientation for teachers. [目的/意义] 构建高校图书馆微信公众平台用户流失行为模型,分析用户流失的影响因素,有助于减少高校图书馆微信公众平台的用户流失,为高校图书馆微信公众平台运营推广提供理论依据和参考建议。[方法/过程] 首先借鉴S-O-R理论构建高校图书馆微信公众平台用户流失行为模型,并结合民族志决策树方法设计访谈问卷,采用扎根理论方法抽取影响因素及各因素之间关系。然后借助解释结构方程模型分析影响因素。最后根据分析结论提出相应的对策和建议。[结果/结论] 构建高校图书馆微信公众平台用户流失行为模型和影响因素的解释结构模型,分析影响因素的层级和相互关系,指出根本原因因素、中间层因素和表象层因素,并针对各层次影响因素和分析结果提出减少高校图书馆微信公众平台用户流失的对策和建议。 相似文献

This article reports on the results of a study that examined public library website adherence to senior-friendly website guidelines. A total of 104 public library websites (N = 104) were analyzed. Compliance with Internet design accessibility principles recommended for older adult Internet users was analyzed, and the findings suggest that current public library website practices may be problematic. As a result, public library websites offering resources and services may present potential accessibility challenges to older adults. Recommendations relevant to public libraries for enhancing library websites and online content are presented. 相似文献

This essay proposes the identification and study of nonusers of academic library reference services. Using the techniques previously applied to different classes of public library users, researchers could benefit from information already available, as well as undertake survey research on lifestyles in academe. The discussion puts forth the claim that nonusers of academic libraries are potential users belonging to the same three groups as current users: faculty, staff, and students. A brief overview of the results of the application of lifestyles research to public library user groups is provided. This article focuses on the impact of learning spaces as well as collaborative technology, which affects library building and design. The article illustrates that learning spaces are an important component in the design of library buildings rather then a temporary trend. During each of our company's latest public library building projects, both librarians and architecture teams have recognized the need to support increases in learning activities. To bring more users to the public library, they recommended that the building needed increased seating to support training, education and in‐house cultural programming. The stories cited in this article suggest that there is a relationship between learning spaces and collaborative technology. Among librarians and library planners, learning spaces are seen as a unifying requirement for the expansion of library services. They recognize that the library's seating plan must include more learning spaces to support social networking, sharing and project base learning. Our qualitative findings suggest that public libraries need more learning spaces to support new types of digital work. 相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to examine the educational and informational needs of public library users in Nigeria. The data was obtained from the answers to an inquiry form handed to persons entering the library during a typical six days of operation in seven public libraries in Nigeria. It was discovered that a large number of users used the library as “study hall” (69.1 percent) and seek library materials for their school work (72.3 percent). It is recommended that public libraries should gear their collections to the needs of the people. Focused collection rather than balanced collection is recommended. Normal library functions should be expanded to include education, literacy, and health care. 相似文献

The School of Public Health at Saint Louis University is located at a greater distance from the library than other programs on the main medical center campus. Physical distance diminishes the ease of access to direct reference services for public health users. To bridge the gap, the library developed the Mobile Reference Service to deliver onsite information assistance with regular office hours each week. Between September 2006 and April 2007, a total of 57 in-depth reference transactions took place over 25 weeks, averaging 2 transactions per week in a 2-hour period. Overall reference transactions from public health users went up 28%, while liaison contacts with public health users doubled compared to the same period the year before. The Mobile Reference Service program has improved library support for research and scholarship, cultivated and strengthened liaison relationships, and enhanced marketing and delivery of library resources and services to the Saint Louis University School of Public Health. 相似文献
