SUMMARY

As the proliferation of electronic content continues, the need to get a better handle on how we communicate about the management of these resources has grown. In many instances, these processes and workflows have a basis in print resource workflow management. However, the discourse used to describe print resource management is not fully transferable to the management of electronic resources. With the rapid development of open-source software, ubiquitous acceptance of sophisticated integrated library systems, and emerging digital standards, new models for workflow and processing of electronic resources are emerging. Drawn from the discourse used in other disciplines, this paper explores ways to create a discourse of electronic resource management to better enable the development of a more universal management scheme for electronic resources.  相似文献

SUMMARY

The Gauteng and Environs Library Consortium (GAELIC) in South Africa is one of the nation's first attempts to pool resources in a multi-million volume regional virtual library. Through the linking of member libraries by networks and the utilisation of innovative technology, the vision is to provide access to information within the context of a 48-hour delivery system for books and to improve this delivery time for copied materials by utilising an electronic delivery system. Ariel, the electronic document delivery system of the Research Libraries Group in the United States, has been selected by the consortium as the standard for timely transfer of electronic information. A literature study of this system, which included a study of a test conducted by one of the GAELIC libraries and an assessment of the need for this delivery mode, indicated that Ariel could support resource sharing in the consortium.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The automated library system (ALS) has undergone significant changes since its inception in the 1970s. It is no longer simply a database to house and retrieve a library's holdings. It has become an integrated library system (ILS) comprised of robust clusters of systems involving every process and module related to libraries.

The Internet, open source, the increase in electronic resources, and the rising expectations of library users are changing the nature of the ILS. Library vendors are at times struggling to keep up with the demand for new services while providing support for existing services.

This article details the evolving role of the ILS and discusses where it could and should be headed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Rather than create a collection solely to support distance learners, libraries should consider the needs of all customers when developing a digital library. The acceptance of digital libraries is dependant upon the conversion of resources to an electronic format that is easy to use and is fully searchable. While electronic journals are widely accepted by most academic library customers, the delivery of online books has had a very different acceptance rate. Rather than support the sequential reading of books, electronic books are commonly used to find information and can be particularly well-suited for reference purposes. This article will provide insight into the history of e-book models and evaluate the usage statistics of a large electronic book collection in an academic library.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 针对以Alma为代表的下一代图书馆服务平台,了解和分析其对电子资源的全流程管理功能,引导图书馆更好地使用下一代图书馆服务平台,提高电子资源的管理质量。[方法/过程] 首先探讨图书馆使用图书馆服务平台管理电子资源的必要性,总结电子资源管理的全生命周期,归纳下一代图书馆服务平台的发展历程和特点,并以Alma为例详细分析下一代图书馆服务平台管理电子资源的全流程功能。[结果/结论] 以Alma为代表的下一代图书馆服务平台对于管理电子资源具有较强的优势,但也存在一些实际操作难点。国内图书馆在实际应用时需结合系统流程制定符合本馆需求的电子资源管理工作流程,同时建立由国内图书馆联盟、图书馆、出版商三方参与的共享合作机制,并敦促系统厂商满足国内图书馆本地化的相关使用需求,才能更好地实现电子资源的全流程管理。  相似文献

The ‘traditional’ academic library system model – i.e. a central system constructed around a common catalogue record that also dictated the end‐users' view – is breaking down. Systems that were constructed to handle the processing and lending of printed items are no longer capable, on their own, of dealing with the variety of different information resources handled by modern academic libraries. A great deal has been written about how end‐users expect more ‘Web 2.0’ features than library catalogues currently provide. New front‐end services have been designed by libraries and library system providers to cater for this need. However, not much has been written about the needs of internal library staff who struggle with processing, handling, and supporting the huge volume of electronic resources subscribed to by libraries. Electronic resource management systems have been developed to cater for these needs, and new standards for data interchange with such systems have been developed. Just as standards were important in encouraging electronic data interchange (orders, invoices, claims, etc.) between libraries, publishers, and agents in the last century, so new standards are evolving for such transactions in the electronic era.  相似文献

Abstract

This research was aimed at developing a university library management model that would support students’ learning. The research was conducted in three phases: 1) an investigation into the requirements of a university library service of instructors; 2) an investigation into the attitudes of librarians, libraries’ administrators, and university’s administrators toward the roles of library and policy concepts relating to university library management that promote students’ learning; and 3) the development of a university library management model for students’ learning support. A mixed research method was applied comprising qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data was collected using in-depth interviews and questionnaires. The findings have led to a proposal of a university library management model that supports student learning, which is comprised of five components: 1) management policy and system; 2) learning resources; 3) learning support services; 4) learning environments; and 5) the competency and roles of information professionals. It can be stated that studies into Thai university library implementation, strategic plans, and self-assessment reports under the quality assurance system showed that even though libraries have updated resources and services following changing situations in policies, technologies, and users’ needs, there is no clear indicator that Thai university libraries have any strategy for acquiring roles to support students’ learning with practical outcomes. Through reliable research work, this study into a model for university library management would result in a means of developing university libraries that truly supports university student learning based on information from instructors, library administrators, and librarians.  相似文献

Abstract

A growing yet unresolved problem in access services today is controlling user access to resources in a networked environment. This paper describes the history of network authentication, explores the issues involved in selecting an authentication method, discusses the benefits and drawbacks of the various methods, identifies efforts by some integrated library services vendors and academic institutions to address this problem, and makes recommendations for selecting an authentication scheme for a college library. The discussions are based in part upon the results of a survey conducted with California community college libraries, various integrated library system vendors, and online resource companies. 图书馆用户对资源需求无限性和对资源获取便捷性的永恒追求,已成为促进图书馆"转化"和"生长"的两大驱动力。传统单馆的图书馆管理系统,或是数字图书馆联盟的管理系统,已无法满足用户的需求。图书馆区域共用平台通过整体规划以及联盟成员馆之间的分工协调,使图书馆之间完全打破限制和阻碍,共享集信息查询、合作编目、协调采购、联合存储、馆际互借、资源发现等为一体的全业务流程,形成覆盖面广、利用方便的生态信息资源管理系统。本文以香港地区八所高校组成的区域性图书馆联盟JULAC为例,阐述区域图书馆共用平台的建设概况和意义。区域共用平台能够加深资源的共建共享,便于联盟成员在同一平台上进行馆藏开发和深度合作,促进馆藏建设由微观向宏观方向发展,使得资源配置更趋优化合理、馆际合作更加全面深入,在资源共享、管理共享、服务共享的基础上,也更大地促进了图书馆共享理念的创新发展。JULAC共用平台的建设模式、共享方式以及业务、人员整合经验等都可为我国其他地区的图书馆共用平台建设提供借鉴。参考文献19。  相似文献

This panel discussed various options and subsequent implications for the management of full-text electronic journal resources. Librarians, commercial vendors, aggregators, and integrated library system representatives shared different perspectives on this rapidly evolving area. The session explored how collaboration among libraries, suppliers, and the OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC) cooperative can address some of the problems being faced with the management of electronic resources. Examples of specific challenges that impact budgets and services are: libraries’ reliance on multiple non-interoperable systems; the difficulties in getting and maintaining high quality and timely metadata; and the issues with managing workflows that cross system and staff boundaries. As work continues to introduce and enhance integrated systems for electronic resource management, these cooperative efforts can improve both the quality of the services and the associated data and workflows.  相似文献

Abstract

This article presents the results of a survey of consortial and reciprocal agreements among academic interlibrary loan departments. An electronic survey was created using SurveyMonkey software. The survey consisted of 18 questions (Appendix A). The questions covered the types of consortial agreements by geographic area, what types of items are loaned, the number of reciprocal agreements, fees for non-member libraries and resource sharing agreements that use integrated library systems. The purpose of the survey was to gather information on the various types of consortial agreements in use today in interlibrary loan departments.  相似文献

Planning for the next millennium focuses on the acquisition of electronic formats and resource sharing with local libraries to extend access to information and remote electronic resources. The evolution of print, electronic, and digital resources, as well as shifting technology advancements, are significant drivers of change in libraries, including library systems. This article reviews the latest variety of library systems available focusing on the library services platform, 1 1. “Library services platform” is a term used by Marshall Breeding. See Marshall Breeding, Contents from the Guest Editor, 24 Information Standards Quarterly 2, 2 (2012). open source solutions, and the hybrid open source library services platform. All of these newer alternatives to the integrated library system are attempting in their own way to address the overarching drive for libraries, including law libraries, to have greater efficiencies in the following ways: (1) more productive business processes, (2) collaboration among libraries, institutions, and vendors, and (3) unfettered access to open code and software in order to customize library systems to their own specifications.  相似文献

SUMMARY

This article will look at the historical development of cooperative service and resource sharing in libraries. Interlibrary Loan, union catalogs, library consortia, and electronic reference, have all impacted library work in the past century. The dissolving of walls is one of the main themes of library history in the 20th century. The developments of these years has clearly put the ability to use both human and institutional resources at the heart of contemporary library service. In looking at how this came to be, this article will examine developments in societal infrastructure and technology that made cooperative schemes both possible and economical. This article will also discuss how these developments have forced libraries to consider cooperative ways to respond to their primary service function. Lastly, conclusions will be drawn about how the emerging cooperative environment is changing the educational role of the librarian.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study used a quantitative survey to investigate the knowledge and use of online databases and the library's online public access catalog by final-year business associate degree students in five selected Jamaican community colleges. The study sought to determine students’ knowledge of electronic library resources, their value for electronic and print resources, the purposes for which students use electronic library resources, the influences on student use of electronic library resources, and the effects of training and instruction. Results from the study indicated that students are increasingly using Internet search engines for research purposes rather than online databases. Results also indicated that electronic library resources such as the OPAC are being underutilized by community college students. It was evident that proper instructional guidance is needed and welcomed by students. The findings of the study are critical to the implementation of policies and procedures geared toward sensitizing school administrators, library professionals, and other stakeholders to the benefits of increasing students’ knowledge and use of electronic library resources. Data will aid administrators in strategic planning and investments pertaining to these resources, and provide recommendations to improve knowledge and use of these resources within libraries. The research illustrates the special needs of community college students in Jamaica, particularly relating to needed instructional programs, in an effort to impart knowledge and promote the use of electronic library resources in these colleges.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A research project was undertaken by a university library system to develop a sustainable user experience strategy. A task force was convened to conduct a pilot project with members from both libraries in the system to assess staffing responsibilities, guidelines, processes, and data-gathering procedures. The team tested an electronic resources list common to both libraries. In describing the methods employed by the task force in their research, this article outlines the benefits and drawbacks of staffing configurations to initiate user experience practices in an academic library setting.  相似文献
