ABSTRACT

This research created a profile of a modern LIS professional by discussing the competencies and skills essential in successfully conducting one's duties. Through a series of focus group discussions and interviews, the researcher identified essential competencies modern LIS professionals should possess. Aside from traditional skills such as cataloging and classification; indexing and abstracting; and library management, non-traditional competencies such as communication skills, advocacy skills, teaching skills, and technological skills were revealed to be vital competencies. These were identified and further supported by discussions of actual library work experiences. In the end, a profile was created it was concluded that a modern LIS professional should be pro-active; an effective communicator; well-informed; adaptable; and should advocate causes relevant to the practice of librarianship.  相似文献

This article shares the experience of one practicing cataloger invited to teach an online introductory cataloging course as an adjunct. Teaching across cultures as a result of a Fulbright Senior Fellowship is a life-changing event for many Fulbright Fellows. This American author experienced powerful classroom dynamics in teaching her library science students at the University of Botswana during her 1999–2000 Fulbright. Her attempt to restructure a traditional lecture class to a student-centered learning environment created classroom dynamics that forced her to examine her pedagogical beliefs for their evident weaknesses. This ethnographic study reports on her teaching experiences and her analysis of what she discovered in the process, findings that continue to impact her study of teaching and learning.  相似文献

Due to the nature of serials, cataloging machine-readable records that address the "serial" aspect of any material can be challenging as well as frustrating. The cataloging of computer files also presents unique difficulties. A serials cataloger discusses the advantages of treating computer files as serials for cataloging and processing purposes, and outlines methodologies for doing so. She examines general concerns and addresses issues pertaining to both direct and remote access to the materials. Giving hints from her own experience, she suggests tools and resources available that can assist both catalogers and non-catalogers in the interpretation of serial computer file records.  相似文献

With trends in collection development moving toward digital, streaming resources, and acquiring sets of materials, the Higher Education Library Information Network (HELIN) Consortium pulled together cataloging, acquisitions, and licensing information through a discovery platform. The discovery layer, in this case Innovative Interface's Encore, harvests disparate collections and enables the library user to easily refine her search through facets. Rice Sanders described the HELIN Consortium's Encore implementation and experiences, while McQuillan highlighted the West Bloomfield Township Public Library use of the Encore platform and other products.  相似文献

E-books are an important part of library collections. Allowing patrons to easily find e-books in a library’s online catalog requires properly cataloging these materials. Miao Jin, Catalog Librarian at Hinds Community College, gave a presentation titled “Cataloging e-Books: Dealing with Vendors and Various Other Problems” at the Mississippi State University Libraries’ eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit held in the Mitchell Memorial Library on August 2, 2013. Jin provided information on cataloging her library’s e-books and adding them to the library’s online catalog. She presented strategies for loading e-book machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records, and shared her experience working with vendors.  相似文献

The changing role of paraprofessional catalogers in academic libraries is described vis-á-vis their counterparts, the professional catalogers. Today paraprofessional catalogers are getting involved in what used to be considered "professional work." Based on a set of web survey data, this study examines cataloging and metadata professionals' perspectives on issues surrounding continuing education. The results show that emerging data standards such as the Semantic Web and BIBFRAME, as well as metadata and digital library-related topics, are subject areas currently central to their professional concerns, in addition to RDA, for professional development. Topics such as ontologies, social tagging, and automatic metadata generation were rarely reported. Meaningful interactions were often found to be lacking in online education. The results provide evidence of the need to expand the pool of shared expertise to meet our collective needs for continuing education in the cataloging and metadata community.  相似文献

The beginnings and the early years of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) had a profound impact on the approach taken to cataloging in North America and around the world. The author explores the concept of Generation X and reflects on her experiences as an academic librarian who demographically fits into this generation of individuals born between 1961 and 1981. After a definition of the concept and a review of the literature, the author reveals her own experience as a member of this generation and her initial professional impressions as an academic librarian.
