Romani is a language of northern Indic origin spoken natively by an estimated 2.5 million people, primarily in Eurasia but also in North America. The history of publication patterns in Romani has not been well documented. Extracting data about this history based on available information in large bibliographic databases such as OCLC WorldCat has been hampered by unfortunate misapplication of certain language codes, making it all but impossible to filter search results efficiently using Romani language as a parameter. The author discusses how he was able to correct much of this inaccurate data in OCLC WorldCat. 相似文献

To determine the feasibility of our library providing full cataloging for textbooks using OCLC, I conducted a study of records in the OCLC data base and performed a literature search on the topic. I found that a preponderance of duplicate OCLC records and a lack of uniformity in cataloging practices would make this a costly proposition. It would also make it difficult to train a paraprofessional to select catalog records and to handle the cataloging of these materials. This paper suggests standards to be considered by the appropriate ALA committees in order to alleviate the duplication of records and to make textbook cataloging easier. 相似文献

Consistent romanization practice is one of the biggest challenges in cataloging Japanese materials. This study provides a snapshot of how Japanese is inconsistently or incorrectly romanized in Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) WorldCat records, and analyzes factors that might be causing the romanization problems among the records. Particular focus is placed on the analysis of word division problems that might be affected by different interpretations and applications of the ALA-LC Romanization Tables rules. Results revealed major factors behind the inconsistencies that were associated with the ambiguity and complexity of the word division rules. Solutions and ideas for further studies are suggested. 相似文献

Libraries have been making decisions on whether to use a single- or separate-record approach for cataloging e-serials based on what works best in their local library integrated systems and which approach is likely to save cataloging time. However, in the new network-level cataloging and OCLC WorldCat Local environment, we need to make cataloging decisions based on what works best in a network-level platform. This article discusses the OCLC WorldCat Local environment, the concept of network-level cataloging, and why Washington State University has responded by migrating from a single-record to separate-record cataloging policy for e-serials. 相似文献

A collaborative cataloging project for music sound recordings between two University of California campuses matches available staffing at UC San Diego with the need for better access to a high-priority collection of audio CDs at UC Santa Barbara, with promising results. Since 1986, a project has been underway to catalog a private collection of the massive body of work of the artist Anne Ward Huey. The project has progressed from a handwritten card file to a computer file using AACR 2 and OCLC tags and format. A compact disc or videotape file is also presently projected. In addition to taking traditional library cataloging out of the library setting, the project has addressed a number of problems involved in cataloging silkscreen prints, and the records created by the project also contain information that AACR 2 does not specifically address but that artists consider important. The author recommends that the cataloging rules be revised to encompass these specific aspects of cataloging art work. This project could serve as a prototype by which other private or public art collections could receive thorough, enhanced documentation. 相似文献

The article traces the career of Frederick G. Kilgour (1914–2006), who is widely recognized as one of the leading figures in 20th-century librarianship. He founded the Ohio College Library Center (OCLC) and from 1967 to 1981 was its first president and chief executive officer, presiding over OCLC's rapid growth from an intrastate network to an international network. In 1971, under Kilgour's leadership, OCLC introduced an online shared cataloging system and an online union catalog (WorldCat) that is today the world's foremost bibliographic database. In 1978, he created the OCLC Office of Research, and in 1979, under his direction, OCLC launched its online interlibrary loan system. The author of 205 scholarly papers, Kilgour received numerous awards and honors over the course a career that took him from Harvard University Library, to the Office of Strategic Services in World War II, to Yale Medical Library, to OCLC, and finally, to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he spent his final years on the faculty of the School of Information and Library Science as a Distinguished Research Professor. 相似文献

OCLC’s WorldCat now holds more than 320 million bibliographic records with some 2-plus billion holdings linked to the bibliographic records. The vast majority of the world’s libraries, archives, and museums rely on OCLC as the primary source for bibliographic records. Compared to all other options, OCLC is clearly the very large elephant in the room. OCLC provides a broad range of services, including WorldShare Metadata Services (cataloging); WorldShare Interlibrary Loan (sharing resources); WorldShare Management Services (cloud-based integrated library system); WorldCat Discovery Services; and CONTENTdm? (management of digital collections). A representative sample of 300 printed monographs and analyzed serials distributed to depository libraries was searched in the OCLC online system to determine when, how, and by whom depository documents are likely to be cataloged. Particular attention was paid to differences between dates of distribution and cataloging for sales publications, for all titles cataloged by the Government Printing Office, and for those cataloged by the Library of Congress. Patterns relating to document distribution as well as to cataloging practices were discernible from survey results and are presented here. Major findings may be summarized as follows: 1) not all depository monographs are cataloged by the Government Printing Office; 2) sales publications are cataloged quickly, often before distribution by GPO; 3) the quality of cataloging records for depository documents available on OCLC is generally high; 4) the Library of Congress catalogs relatively few depository documents and is comparatively slow to do so; and 5) many different types of OCLC member libraries catalog federal depository documents, often before GPO does. The article concludes with a discussion of implications for future changes in documents cataloging policies among depository libraries, and argues for greater inclusion of documents records in the many online, public-access catalogs currently being planned or used. 相似文献

At Vanderbilt University Library attempts to coordinate pre-order and pre-cataloging OCLC searching guidelines were only partially successful until the Verification Unit became part of the Monographic Services (i.e., cataloging) Department. With Verification's reporting to the head of cataloging and with the department head's more immediate awareness of verification procedures, closer coordination between verification and cataloging followed quickly. In two years, production in the LC Copy Catalog Unit increased 104%. 相似文献
