Embedded librarian models can assume different forms and levels, depending on patron needs and a library’s choice of delivery services. An academic health sciences library decided to enhance its service delivery model by integrating a librarian into the College of Pharmacy, approximately 250?miles away from the main library. This article describes the embedded librarian’s first-year experience, challenges, and opportunities working as a library faculty in the college. The comparison of one-year recorded statistics on preembedded and postembedded activities demonstrated the effectiveness and impact of such an embedded librarian model.  相似文献

Abstract

A practicing profession’s bond to the university accentuates the profession’s mode of knowledge creation and dissemination. Social work journals are seen to facilitate the growth and development of scientifically based knowledge in the profession. The literature reports that in the social work profession social work practitioners do not read a great deal of research articles in journals, do not contribute many articles to scholarly journals, do not write many articles based on empirical research, and are not influenced by social work theory. Grey documentation is presented as an additional source of knowledge for the social work practitioner. Its characteristics, subject areas, mode of presentation and sources are seen as making it conducive for use by social work practitioners. A proposal for the dissemination of grey documentation in social work is made.  相似文献

This article explores how a model that represents the thoughts and actions of a school librarian responding to clients’ inquiries can be used in the creation of a framework to either promote reflection among intermediaries on their own practice or afford a means of evaluating a library’s reference service. Against a background of pertinent studies by Taylor and Kuhlthau, this article traces how the proposed strategy initially developed from a typology addressing the ways adults seek to meet young people’s requests for information and outlines issues for consideration by professionals intent on using the framework in their own organizations.  相似文献

Abstract

Inspired by Gao’s text analysis of communication studies faculty, this study looks at the trends from 176 faculty publications from the criminal justice department at the University of Nevada, Reno. Criminal justice faculty publications are missing from library science text analysis literature. This study uses Voyant and NVivo 12 to analyze words and phrases from titles and abstracts to identify research interests. Voyant itself was found to be sufficient and identified specific research trends such as organizational commitment, amber alerts, and death qualification. This study can assist liaison librarians in selecting between these two tools based on their needs.  相似文献

A community-based participatory research project was conducted to identify health information needs of clients (an underserved population) at a homeless shelter. Staff at the shelter, medical students, and public librarians were sought as outreach partners; their needs and challenges in accessing health information resources to serve underserved populations were also assessed. The community needs assessment yielded results that helped shape a medical library's efforts in supporting medical students’ service-learning activities related to humanistic education. The resulting data also informed library decisions on health information education outreach programs tailored to vulnerable, underserved populations and community partners serving the specific populations in the communities.  相似文献

The proliferation of research guides created using the LibGuides platform has triggered extensive discussion touting their benefits for everything from assessment, engagement, and marketing, to outreach and pedagogy. However, there is at present a relative paucity of critical reflection about the product’s place in the broader informational landscape. This article is an attempt to redress this lacuna. Relying primarily on examples from the field of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies, the authors briefly describe the evolution of online research guides; identify reasons for the proliferation of Springshare’s product in academic libraries; question whether LibGuides improve learning or reinforce information inequality in higher education; and propose a way to move beyond LibGuides.  相似文献

Abstract

The Center for Families Resource Library at St. Louis Children’s Hospital was integrated into the hospital’s new Epic electronic medical records system in June 2018. The new system enables clinicians to request consults from the Center for Families Resource Library. The librarian can participate more actively and collaboratively with patient education by providing reliable health information and charting it as part of the patient’s permanent record. The article reviews improvements over the former system and reveals an enhanced role for the health services librarian.  相似文献

Projects in undergraduate research programs differ from assignments in courses in that they are independent of an institution's curriculum, and faculty mentoring plays a more important role. These programs can be fertile ground for librarians interested in participating. Whether such librarians would make good mentors for undergraduate researchers depends largely on their experience and education. Texas Tech University has two of these programs, but library support for them has been sporadic. The time is overdue for librarians involved in campus outreach and instruction to examine how they can best support Texas Tech's undergraduate research activities, and, in particular, whether they are adequately prepared to provide effective mentoring to undergraduate research students. At many hospitals, including Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) University Hospital Rahway, librarians facilitate continuing medical education (CME) programs, sometimes working in that capacity as much as in their traditional librarian functions such as reference, research, cataloging, and bibliographic instruction. This column traces the relationship between the two aspects of the RWJ Rahway’s CME coordinator and health sciences librarian’s job to demonstrate that, because of their duties and skills, medical librarians can meaningfully contribute to hospitals’ CME programs. The worlds of librarianship and CME are further connected by the same goal: the dissemination of information.  相似文献

This article describes how the reference department at a large academic health sciences library evolved to address the clinical and research information needs of the parent organization without losing its close connections to the classroom and curriculum. Closing the reference desk, moving to on-call and house call models, designing positions such as clinical research librarian and basic biomedical sciences librarian, finding alternative funding to grow the department, providing technology and training to facilitate librarians' work, and developing programming for and taking advice from library clients facilitated efforts to create a relevant presence and solidify the library's place in the university community.  相似文献

In collaboration with a strategy professor, a research librarian at a four-year SACS and AACSB-accredited Southern college transitioned from the one-time library instruction model to the role of an embedded librarian within a senior-level capstone course over a multi-year transition period. Through the use of multiple quantitative and qualitative assessment instruments, as well as anecdotal comments, and finally pre- and post-test student satisfaction and learning surveys, the library instruction and course requirements were revised. This course's implementation formed the basis of a campus-wide effort to embed librarians within on-campus and online/hybrid courses. With staffing and funding shortages and rapidly changing expectations from patrons, what is actually happening at the reference desk in today’s libraries? Understanding the needs today’s reference librarians face can be useful in developing ways to support those needs. Asking them to make some predictions on the future of public library reference work gives Library and Information Science (LIS) students, and libraries preparing for the future, a valuable look at the expertise provided by experience. This understanding will help make some realistic decisions about reference staffing and service needs and provide some guidance for those aspiring to careers in public library reference.  相似文献

Abstract

In January 2020, liaison librarians at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) adopted the online appointment scheduling tool “Microsoft Bookings” for student research consultations. We have found that a consistent web-based scheduling system has decreased demands on liaisons’ time, provided an easier referral method for our front-line desk staff, and lowered barriers for student access. In this column, we discuss our process and outcomes, as well as practical suggestions for those interested in adopting such a program at their institution.  相似文献

This article focuses on the University of Warwick's Wolfson Research Exchange which opened in October 2008. It describes the varied environment that the facility offers to Warwick's research community, and explores the service model provided. The new approaches to learning space design and the students’ expectations that informed and influenced the Research Exchange's creation (as well as its ongoing service development) are also discussed. This case study provides an overview of the Research Exchange's developments, successes, and lessons learned which could be applicable to other institutions exploring dedicated spaces and support for their research communities.  相似文献

Academic librarians engage students in the learning management system to provide information literacy instruction and answer individual reference questions related to scholarly research. When collaborating with faculty, embedded librarians deliver the library’s authoritative electronic resources to students working on research projects. Trends in academic publishing and technological innovations make possible online search for a generation reliant on mobile devices. Although students are able to access much digital content available through academic libraries and open access initiatives, they still appreciate guidance from embedded librarians who visit their learning management system courses to explain the complexities of scholarly research and suggest solutions.  相似文献
