In this paper we examine the strategic role of data resources in emergent industries. We contrast the resource-based view and the relational view theories to examine how data resources can help organizations create and capture value. We compare two organizations from two different industries to understand how different types of data resources can provide a competitive advantage. We also examine the role of strategic partnerships in capturing value created through the exploitation of data resources. We conclude that while data often serve as a required resource for entry into new markets, strategic partnerships play a critical role in capturing value created through the exploitation of data resources. The emergent partnership structures are remarkably similar across the two organizations. They target rapid market expansion through encapsulation of data resources within highly scalable web services and the use of standardized legal contracts. We also find that temporal decoupling between value creation and value capture can expose firms to the erosion of the competitive advantage gained through investment in data resources.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to investigate the impact of self-generated and explicitly acquired contextual knowledge of teammates’ defensive qualities on anticipatory performance in a complex sensorimotor task. Twelve expert and twelve near-expert handball players were examined in a domain-specific defence task presented in an immersive virtual-reality environment. In two-thirds of the trials, 1:1 situations (i.e., teammate versus opponent) were presented in which the teammates next to the participant played a specific role. Whilst the weak teammate lost every situation, which required the participant to block a throw, the strong teammate won every situation, which required the participant to stay in his position. Since explicit knowledge of this pattern was only provided in a later phase of the experiment, participants would have to generate the respective knowledge themselves beforehand. To this end, the following variables were analysed: the detection of experimentally induced patterns, the correctness of the participants’ motor responses and their positioning as a function of the respective teammate’s defensive quality. Main results showed that experts are better able to utilize both self-generated as well as explicitly acquired knowledge regarding teammates’ defensive qualities, whereas near-experts’ performance was enhanced only by explicitly provided contextual knowledge.  相似文献

Base of the Pyramid (BoP) producers have limited opportunities to create and capture value due to various constraints, which keeps them trapped in the vicious cycle of poverty. The emerging literature on the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the poverty alleviation of BoP producers focuses on ICT-enabled solutions to value capture. However, ICT-enabled solutions to create value at the BoP have received less attention. In this paper, we study the issues surrounding value creation for non-commodity BoP producers by employing a case study of four organisations in rural India. Our findings reveal two critical mechanisms for ICT-enabled value creation in a resource-constrained environment: awareness creation and repeated engagement. We find that ICT-enabled awareness creation has a positive impact on value-added, but this effect decreases as product complexity increases. We also find that ICT-mediated repeated engagement and value-added have an inverted U-shape relationship, with value-added increasing with complexity, but after a threshold, value-added declines with increase in complexity. Building on these findings, we use the lens of value co-creation and media richness perspective to contribute to theory, practice and policy by underscoring how awareness creation and repeated engagement act as key dimensions for value creation. We delineate how limitations in ICT infrastructure can be overcome in resource-constrained environments and explicate a conceptualisation of ICT-mediated joint value creation in general for spatially separated actors.  相似文献
