The purpose of this article is to explore the relevance of Plato's Sophist in the context of coaching. The Sophist dialogue focuses upon the role of the philosopher as a therapist of the soul rather than simply a conveyer or wholesaler of knowledge. This article provides a rationale for the coach to be more than a technical conveyer of skill in which the athlete is perceived to be machine-like (i.e., homo mechanicus) in order to take on a more holistic role in the life of the athlete. Through the application of the noble sophist to the Ecological Task Analysis theory (ETA), we demonstrate how the fundamental perception of the role of the coach may be expanded and redefined to become more of a “midwife” for the birth of personal and moral development.  相似文献

This article describes the elements of the undergraduate core in kinesiology that have been established by the American Kinesiology Association. The American Kinesiology Association also describes a set of ten student-learning outcomes that emanate from the four core content elements. This information has been developed by the American Kinesiology Association to provide guidance regarding the development of locally appropriate curricula and learning outcomes for American Kinesiology Association member institutions. The American Kinesiology Association Core Curriculum is considered to be in the public domain and the American Kinesiology Association reserves the right to reproduce the document in a number of venues and formats. The American Kinesiology Association believes that increased communication relative to this topic will lead to enhanced communication across kinesiology programs which will in turn will lead to an informed sharing of ideas and perspectives. This will result in enhanced curricula in American Kinesiology Association departments across the nation and beyond.  相似文献

The year 1999 was designated the International Year of Older Persons (IYOP) by the United Nations and focused attention on the many challenges facing society as a result of the aging of the population during the 20th century. Traditional models of health and social care are likely to be severely challenged by growing numbers of older adults in both industrialized and developing societies. There is now compelling evidence that regular physical activity is associated with significant physiological, psychological, and social benefits in older adult populations. This paper argues that it may be possible for many older persons to age successfully and that advancing age need not be associated with only decline and decay. Examples are provided of four older persons who are managing to age successfully. There is a compelling need for the development of integrated activity programs that focus not only on physical activity, but also attempt to address the intellectual, social, and spiritual needs of older persons using a more holistic approach than is commonly used at present.  相似文献

In this article, we contribute to understanding of the mechanisms through which students’ socio-economic family background can translate into academic performance by focusing on the concept of student engagement. Drawing on theoretical perspectives from disciplines across the social sciences, and a major nationally representative dataset from Australia, which links survey responses with administrative records on school performance, we conduct a series of multiple regression models to investigate the mediating role of student engagement on the relationship between students’ socio-economic status (SES) and academic achievement. We find that, first, low-SES students show lower levels of engagement than other students, particularly in terms of behavioural and cognitive aspects; they also have lower achievement levels as measured by standardised test scores. We further find that lower engagement is associated with lower achievement levels, and that the effects of SES on achievement are partially mediated through student engagement. Although there are clearly other mechanisms in place that operate at the same time, it is important to focus on student engagement since it can be directly influenced by teachers and school leaders, as well as curriculum choices and school resources. This makes it a ripe target for government policies aimed at improving educational outcomes for students from low-SES families, compared with approaches targeting the influences of family environment or peer groups.  相似文献
