Online learning is crucial to success for higher education institutions. Whilst the existing literature predominantly focused on its economic advantages, we focused on its inclusivity. At an online learning unit of a UK university, the number of students with disabilities (SWD) is three times higher than the national average. Having a degree makes significant financial and psychological differences in the lives of SWD. Though recent literature focused on inclusivity of online learning, an appraisal of first-hand experience of SWD studying online is a missing perspective. Accordingly, we aimed to explore their experience, using thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews involving ten SWD. Three themes emerged: (1) having control over studies as an advantage of online learning, (2) personal touch helps SWD’s online learning, and (3) challenges SWD experience with the social element of online learning. Our findings will help to develop the inclusivity of online learning to a new level. 相似文献

Research has found discrepancies among folk beliefs about lie detection, deception cue utility, and retrospective accounts of detected lies. Elite customs agents (N = 37) were surveyed regarding their overall beliefs about how to detect lies (general strategy), their opinions about best practices (best strategy), and about a successfully detected lie (actual strategy). Responses were coded in three nonexclusive broad categories: (a) behavioral cues, (b) communication content and evidence, and (c) interactive-questioning approaches. Behavioral cues, especially nonverbal cues, were listed most frequently as general beliefs. Opinions about the best approach were evenly split across the three categories. Communication content and evidence was the most frequently reported actual detection method and was mentioned in 97% of the responses. The results are discussed in relation to Truth-Default Theory and their implications for lie detection practice. 相似文献

日本的琵琶湖在经历了日本高度经济增长期片面的水资源开发利用阶段后,已转向了开发利用与保护相结合的阶段,其长远目标是通过琵琶湖的长期性战略规划的实施,使琵琶湖的水质恢复到日本高度经济增长期以前的水平、琵琶湖的生态得到修复。本文在论述日本琵琶湖的特殊性与重要性、琵琶湖面临的问题的基础上,介绍了琵琶湖保护管理的组织结构、管理体系;分析了琵琶湖以流域为单元、政府主导与全民参与的湖泊保护管理模式。在借鉴琵琶湖保护管理经验的基础上,提出了江苏省湖泊的保护管理模式及相应的建议。 相似文献

ABSTRACTOlder people who engage in sports and exercise in a group render greater benefits for socio-psychological aspects compared to exercising alone. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of specific types of sports and exercise groups and the association with self-rated health, depressive symptoms, and frequency of laughter among community-dwelling older people. We used cross-sectional data from the 2016 Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study and analysed 63,465 males and 68,497 females aged ≥65 years. The top three most popular types among males were golf (11.3%), walking (8.4%), and ground golf (6.3%). Among females, the top three were fitness exercises (13.8%), walking (8.3%), and weight exercises (6.2%). After adjusting for potential confounders, engaging in golf with a group was significantly related with excellent self-rated health (prevalence ratio, PR, 1.31 in male and 1.78 in female), low depressive symptoms (PR, 0.70 and 0.71), and a high frequency of laughter (PR, 1.12 and 1.13). Among females, walking displayed a significant relationship with all three characteristics (PR, 1.23, 0.79, and 1.06, respectively). Golf in older males and walking in older females might be the first choice for an effective programme to spread sports and exercise groups within the older Japanese community. 相似文献

How does the nature of firms’ alliance portfolio in terms of exploration versus exploitation affect performance? Building on prior research grounded in the resource-based view and the relational perspective, we expand firms’ boundary to include their inter-firm relationships and their immediate environment, and develop an extended resource-based framework centering on the concept of fit. Specifically, we propose that whether the exploration versus exploitation orientation of an alliance portfolio may benefit firm performance depends on how such an orientation fits the firm's internal organizational characteristics, strategic orientations, and the industry environment. Data from five U.S. industries over eight years largely support our thesis. Overall, our study calls for a holistic approach to consider the importance of organizational, strategic, and environmental fit in understanding the performance implications of alliance-formation choices. 相似文献

Since when has the word ‘border’ started to occupy my mind? That's I can't tell. But, once in a while, the forgotten memories are suddenly brought back to life in the vaguest fashion, and often out of the context. They come out of nowhere. Out of a labyrinth of time, it seems. I was born and grew up on a small island, some 400 kilometers east of the Okinawa Island. It was an island of immigrants who had sought a job at the sugar factory owned by a wealthy family from Japan. It was also an island of diasporas. Micro-orifice based cell fusion assures high-yield fusion without compromising the cell viability. This paper examines feasibility of a dielectrophoresis (DEP) assisted cell trapping method for parallel fusion with a micro-orifice array. The goal is to create viable fusants for studying postfusion cell behavior. We fabricated a microfluidic chip that contained a chamber and partition. The partition divided the chamber into two compartments and it had a number of embedded micro-orifices. The voltage applied to the electrodes located at each compartment generated an electric field distribution concentrating in micro-orifices. Cells introduced into each compartment moved toward the micro-orifice array by manipulation of hydrostatic pressure. DEP assisted trapping was used to keep the cells in micro-orifice and to establish cell to cell contact through orifice. By applying a pulse, cell fusion was initiated to form a neck between cells. The neck passing through the orifice resulted in immobilization of the fused cell pair at micro-orifice. After washing away the unfused cells, the chip was loaded to a microscope with stage top incubator for time lapse imaging of the selected fusants. The viable fusants were successfully generated by fusion of mouse fibroblast cells (L929). Time lapse observation of the fusants showed that fused cell pairs escaping from micro-orifice became one tetraploid cell. The generated tetraploid cells divided into three daughter cells. The fusants generated with a smaller micro-orifice (diameter∼2 μm) were kept immobilized at micro-orifice until cell division phase. After observation of two synchronized cell divisions, the fusant divided into four daughter cells. We conclude that the presented method of cell pairing and fusion is suitable for high-yield generation of viable fusants and furthermore, subsequent study of postfusion phenomena. 相似文献

The effect of metacomprehension judgment task on comprehension monitoring and metacognitive accuracy

The authors investigated differences in the processes underlying two types of metacomprehension judgments: judgments of difficulty and predictions of performance (JOD vs. POP). An experiment was conducted to assess whether these two types of judgments aligned with different types of processing cues, and whether their accuracy correlated with different factors such as sensitivity to processing ease and reading ability. Participants (n?=?72) read an extended text about brain structure and after each sentence made either a JOD or POP. Results suggested that JODs and POPs were made based on different sets of cues because different factors correlated with the accuracy of metacomprehension judgments. JOD accuracy correlated with sensitivity to processing ease and POP accuracy most strongly correlated with reading ability. Engaging in different metacomprehension judgments during reading may alter the information sources to which a reader attends and which factors influence metacognitive accuracy. 相似文献
