Discovery products promise to offer library patrons one-stop shopping for library resources. In order to accomplish this, they harvest metadata from various library databases and repositories such as integrated library systems, institutional repositories, and digital libraries. Discovery products then index this metadata along with the metadata for resources from the discovery service into a single product for search. The most common method used to harvest local metadata is the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). This column first looks at discovery, then it describes OAI-PMH and some of the issues involved with effectively harvesting library metadata. 相似文献

以处理文献资源为基本目的的元数据标准(如Dublin Core,IMS and LOM)和专业置标语言(如MatML,MathML,CML,GML)近年来都在以前所未有的速度向前发展,然而其发展和应用却缺乏相互沟通和操作。数字图书馆建设过程中通常会遇到在不同水平上对文献处理的各种格式和方法进行选择与应用、这些格式和标准如何进行互操作等问题。本文分析用于描述文献资源的元数据和面向专业的置标语言在数字图书馆中对知识进行表述的特点和功能,讨论其在对一个资源作结构上和语义上的分解时的作用,指出元数据与置标语言结合的必要性,并提出在同一数字图书馆中将两者结合起来使用的可行方法。 相似文献

The purpose of this article is to study a broad set of journal papers related to metadata and quality in digital repositories and libraries, and to provide a quantitative analysis of the relevant research. It also aims at identifying open issues and future directions for research. A detailed search was carried out in relevant journals of information science, computer science, and library science; mainly, that allowed us to identify an extensive corpora of relevant work. The identified papers were classified based on an existing framework and a statistical analysis was carried out on the main classifications used within the framework. The analysis of the 702 papers identified, led to a series of statements for the field examined, focusing on the type of research carried out, the research methods deployed, and the research claims made. In addition, the papers were classified based on their target audiences, disciplines, as well as institutional and geographical origins. The article identifies areas in the literature that have not been addressed, as well as areas for future research. It also provides a clear image of the areas already researched, analyzing scientific literature that covers 20 years of repository/library deployment. This article makes an original contribution for researchers, practitioners, and managers of digital repositories and libraries alike as it provides a set of specific recommendations for the metadata and quality in digital repositories and libraries research agenda, along with a thorough analysis and classification of the research carried out so far. 相似文献

The World Wide Web and other information technologies have deeply changed our information environment and influenced how we index and access the information we need. The library is a good example of this revolution. Instead of a building that holds books, the library is evolving into an electronic portal to digital materials from across the globe. Facing so many distributed and heterogeneous digital resources, layered metadata are efficient but sophisticated tools that make it easier to find the best information resources. In recent years many types of item-level metadata with which people are familiar have appeared. In contrast to item-level metadata, collection level metadata has not been broadly used, especially in China. By illustrating what a collection is and why we should create collection level metadata, we introduce the research and usage of collection level metadata in China and analyze the problems and limitations of the metadata being used. 面向服务的体系结构、对等网络和网格技术的发展为数字图书馆体系结构的研究和应用带来了新的机遇,使其在开放性和柔韧性方面的拓展成为可能。下一代数字图书馆应当是能为更多用户服务的、自适应性更强的服务组织,它是以联邦模式进行资源库的构建和服务的组织。与传统的数字图书馆相比,下一代数字图书馆的体系结构将更为分布和动态,从而适应资源库、元数据和服务所呈现出的高度异构性。本文通过几个数字图书馆研究项目,对下一代数字图书馆的体系结构进行了分析讨论,并就其信息访问的主要方面(资源管理、信息检索)所面临的机遇和挑战进行了探讨,给出了相应的解决方案。 相似文献
