Information Retrieval Systeme haben in den letzten Jahren nur geringe Verbesserungen in der Retrieval Performance erzielt. Wir arbeiten an neuen Ans?tzen, dem sogenannten Collaborativen Information Retrieval (CIR), die das Potential haben, starke Verbesserungen zu erreichen. CIR ist die Methode, mit der durch Ausnutzen von Informationen aus früheren Anfragen die Retrieval Peformance für die aktuelle Anfrage verbessert wird. Wir haben ein eingeschr?nktes Szenario, in dem nur alte Anfragen und dazu relevante Antwortdokumente zur Verfügung stehen. Neue Ans?tze für Methoden der Query Expansion führen unter diesen Bedingungen zu Verbesserungen der Retrieval Performance . The accuracy of ad-hoc document retrieval systems has reached a stable plateau in the last few years. We are working on so-called collaborative information retrieval (CIR) systems which have the potential to overcome the current limits. We define CIR as a task, where an information retrieval (IR) system uses information gathered from previous search processes from one or several users to improve retrieval performance for the current user searching for information. We focus on a restricted setting in CIR in which only old queries and correct answer documents to these queries are available for improving a new query. For this restricted setting we propose new approaches for query expansion procedures. We show how CIR methods can improve overall IR performance.

The application of visualization techniques to information retrieval (IR) has resulted in the development of innovative systems and interfaces that are now available for public use. Visualization tools have emerged in research environments and more recently on the Web to retrieve information. Questions arise in regard to the utility of Web-based IR visualization tools for assisting users not only in manipulating search output, but also in managing the information retrieval process. To understand how Web-based visualization tools enable visual information retrieval, this article reviews some of the human perceptual theory behind the graphical interface of information visualization systems, analyzes iconic representations and information density on visualization displays, and examines information retrieval tasks that have been used in visualization system user research. This article is timely since it addresses new technologies for Web information retrieval and discusses future information visualization user research directions.  相似文献

This project investigated how academic users search for information on their real-life research tasks. This article presents the findings of the first of two studies. The study data were collected in the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia. Eleven PhD students' searching behaviors on personal research topics were observed as they interacted with information retrieval (IR) systems. The analysis of search logs uncovered the characteristics of research tasks and the corresponding search strategies.  相似文献

Since its inception in 2013, one of the key contributions of the CLEF eHealth evaluation campaign has been the organization of an ad-hoc information retrieval (IR) benchmarking task. This IR task evaluates systems intended to support laypeople searching for and understanding health information. Each year the task provides registered participants with standard IR test collections consisting of a document collection and topic set. Participants then return retrieval results obtained by their IR systems for each query, which are assessed using a pooling procedure. In this article we focus on CLEF eHealth 2013 and 2014s retrieval task, which saw topics created based on patients’ information needs associated with their medical discharge summaries. We overview the task and datasets created, and the results obtained by participating teams over these two years. We then provide a detailed comparative analysis of the results, and conduct an evaluation of the datasets in the light of these results. This twofold study of the evaluation campaign teaches us about technical aspects of medical IR, such as the effectiveness of query expansion; the quality and characteristics of CLEF eHealth IR datasets, such as their reliability; and how to run an IR evaluation campaign in the medical domain.  相似文献

The classical Probability Ranking Principle (PRP) forms the theoretical basis for probabilistic Information Retrieval (IR) models, which are dominating IR theory since about 20 years. However, the assumptions underlying the PRP often do not hold, and its view is too narrow for interactive information retrieval (IIR). In this article, a new theoretical framework for interactive retrieval is proposed: The basic idea is that during IIR, a user moves between situations. In each situation, the system presents to the user a list of choices, about which s/he has to decide, and the first positive decision moves the user to a new situation. Each choice is associated with a number of cost and probability parameters. Based on these parameters, an optimum ordering of the choices can the derived—the PRP for IIR. The relationship of this rule to the classical PRP is described, and issues of further research are pointed out.

BioSYNTHESIS is a prototype intelligent retrieval system under development as part of the IAIMS project at Georgetown University. The aim is to create an integrated system that can retrieve information located on disparate computer systems. The project work has been divided in two phases: BioSYNTHESIS I, development of a single menu to access various databases which reside on different computers; and BioSYNTHESIS II, development of a search component that facilitates complex searching for the user. BioSYNTHESIS II will accept a user's query and conduct a search for appropriate information in the IAIMS databases at Georgetown. For information not available at Georgetown, such as full text, it will access selected remote systems and translate the search query as appropriate for the target system. The search through various computer systems and different databases with unique storage and retrieval structures will be transparent to the user. BioSYNTHESIS I is complete and available to users. The design work for BioSYNTHESIS II is under development and will continue as a multiyear technical research effort of the proposed Georgetown IAIMS implementation project.  相似文献

[目的/意义]信息检索本质上是一个认知过程,研究促进用户认知的交互式信息检索模型具有重要意义。[研究设计/方法]以建构主义理论为指导,以促进用户的认知发展为研究目标,构建了以信息空间层、用户空间层和界面交互层为顶层分析框架的交互式信息检索模型,并开发了原型系统。[结论/发现]实验结果表明原型系统能有效地促进用户对信息空间的探索与挖掘,帮助用户积极主动地进行认知建构,发展认知空间。[创新/价值]将认知建构理论运用于信息检索领域,从交互设计方面对检索系统提出了改进建议,以更好地提供认知支持。  相似文献

交互式跨语言信息检索是信息检索的一个重要分支。在分析交互式跨语言信息检索过程、评价指标、用户行为进展等理论研究基础上,设计一个让用户参与跨语言信息检索全过程的用户检索实验。实验结果表明:用户检索词主要来自检索主题的标题;用户判断文档相关性的准确率较高;目标语言文档全文、译文摘要、译文全文都是用户认可的判断依据;翻译优化方法以及翻译优化与查询扩展的结合方法在用户交互环境下非常有效;用户对于反馈后的翻译仍然愿意做进一步选择;用户对于与跨语言信息检索系统进行交互是有需求并认可的。用户行为分析有助于指导交互式跨语言信息检索系统的设计与实践。  相似文献

[目的/意义]针对新生代用户群体对信息检索系统的需求,提出一种游戏化信息检索系统的理论模型,实现激发用户使用检索系统的兴趣,支持用户的信息检索与交互以及鼓励用户持续使用的目标。[方法/过程]基于游戏化基础理论、相关框架及信息检索系统的机制,对不同游戏元素进行组合,在考虑不同游戏元素与规则之间关系的前提下,设计具有特定功能的模块,实现游戏元素在非游戏情境中的应用。[结果/结论]为构建游戏化信息检索系统的理论模型,确定20种游戏元素,并按其功能进行组合,设计出12类游戏模块,包括5类简单模块和7类复合模块,使信息检索系统具备游戏功能。提出的构建思路和理论模型弥补当前游戏化信息检索领域研究的不足,为开发游戏化信息检索系统及后续的相关研究提供了理论框架。  相似文献

Researchers have just begun to acknowledge the importance of incorporating the component of human-computer interaction in the design of online information systems. With the advent of interactive computer systems designed for direct use by the general public, the need has become apparent to design "friendly" user interfaces. In this regard, online public access calalogs, OPACs, are no exception. Recent research studies of OPAC users have found that (i) subject access in online catalogs is coming to be valued at least as much as known item access, and that (ii) OPAC users have a number of serious difficulties with subject searching. Consequently, we need to understand what characterizes human-computer compatibility and to examine various means of assisting the OPAC user at the heart of online searching tasks.  相似文献

FRBR, FRAD, and FRSAD models propose user tasks as a way to address and categorize functions that a catalog should support. The user tasks are not harmonized among these models, but to do that, they should first be fully understood and analyzed, especially “select” and “identify.” We decided to look at the FRBR user tasks from the perspective of interactive information retrieval (IIR). Several IIR models were reviewed and Ellis’ and Belkin's models were chosen for further analysis and interpretation of FRBR “select” and “identify” tasks.  相似文献

This introduction to the special issue summarizes and contextualizes six novel research contributions at the intersection of information retrieval (IR) and crowdsourcing (also overlapping crowdsourcing’s closely-related sibling, human computation). Several of the papers included in this special issue represent deeper investigations into research topics for which earlier stages of the authors’ research were disseminated at crowdsourcing workshops at SIGIR and WSDM conferences, as well as at the NIST TREC conference. Since the first proposed use of crowdsourcing for IR in 2008, interest in this area has quickly accelerated and led to three workshops, an ongoing NIST TREC track, and a great variety of published papers, talks, and tutorials. We briefly summarize the area in order to help situate the contributions appearing in this special issue. We also discuss some broader current trends and issues in crowdsourcing which bear upon its use in IR and other fields.  相似文献
