Abstract

In today's world, library users are confronted with almost too many options for using information because of the ubiquitousness of technology. Yet, libraries can harness the power of the same technologies to help users find the information they need at the time it is needed. The tools described in this article represent a starting point for librarians looking for technologies that are easy to use, inexpensive, and have a reasonable learning curve. Technologies addressed include classroom technologies such as audience response systems and Web-based technologies, including Web tutorials and screencasting. These technologies enhance and offer flexibility and variety in many educational settings.  相似文献

Summary

The promising future of new and better information services supported by the use of information technologies is well documented. Many journal articles describe successful experiences with better reference and instructional services, new services to new kinds of students who are engaged in distant independent learning or other non-traditional education, and better communication with library users. However, there are many perils on the way to delivering such improvements with the use of new finding tools, new software, new printing systems, and new telecommunication networks. An administrative overview of the sorts of planning which can smooth the implementation of information technology-based reference and instructional services outlines options for staffing, troubleshooting, fund raising, and budget development. Planning takes time and effort, collaboration and creativity. With appropriate emphasis on planning, the promise of implementing improvements in quality of services through information technologies can and should become a reality.  相似文献

Knowledge-based systems (KBS) are part of a new generation of interrelated technologies that have the potential to expand greatly both the ways in which information is conveyed and the tools available to information workers and users for finding, evaluating, analyzing, and assimilating it. These technologies can provide expanded assistance to users in such areas as reference and referral, public access catalog use, and end-user database searching. Moreover, they will allow types of knowledge to be reported and transmitted that have heretofore not been captured in permanent media using such devices as multidimensional information linkages and new forms of interactive media. These developments and KBS in particular offer exciting possibilities; however, as yet, they are only possibilities for libraries. Both further research and considerable financial resources will be required to realize the benefits of KBSs in information work.  相似文献

The new Web generations are influencing the minds and changing the habits of software developers and end users. Users, librarians, and information services professionals can interact more efficiently, creating additional information and content and generating knowledge. This new scenario is also changing the behavior of information providers and users in health sciences libraries. This article reviews the new Web environments and tools that give librarians opportunities to tailor their services better, and gives some examples of the advantages and disadvantages for them and their users. The goal of our research project is to explore the use of new technologies in providing more sophisticated delivery systems for information services in situations where the services of skilled reference librarians are not available. We are working on developing an advanced function workstation equipped with a CD-ROM jukebox of reference books and vocabulary control tools on laser dlsks with keyword access. The user interface will include an expert system to guide users in selecting the types of material best suited to their needs. It will also provide guidance in developing the best search strategy by mapping the terms selected by the users to the more controlled vocabularies of the data bases. Searches that are too broad and yield too much material will be narrowed. Conversely, searches that are too specific will be broadened. The system will also be designed to connect to a full service integrated library network also enabling the user to access the on-line card catalog, check circulation and do interlibrary loans. In developing this system we will be taking advantage of many new technologies including the advanced function workstations, expert systems components, hypertext and optical disk storage.  相似文献

Summary

The reference environment is being transformed by constant changes in computer technologies and communications, as collections and information in general become increasingly accessible electronically. Academic library users now have access to seemingly unlimited information. The explosion of information choices has implications for reference services to all users, particularly adult learners —those students older than the typical undergraduate —who are becoming a large presence on university and college campuses. This paper will explore these implications, stress the need for information literacy, and challenge academic reference librarians to assert themselves in the information arena.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to create a substantial body of knowledge about the factors that influence the success of electronic journals, and to share this knowledge with that in the fields of astronomy and astrophysics in order to help facilitate change.

Structured questionnaires for users (Academic Members, Post-Doctoral Fellows and Research Scholars) containing 40 different questions, many of which were further subdivided and framed in order to get information on various aspects of the usage of electronic journals. The purpose was to identify the basic minimum infrastructure necessary to provide users access to electronic journals and to facilitate easy response in all major A&A organizations in India.

The increasing use of the electronic information-seeking environment has produced changes in the practice of science. Significant research has been conducted already on the impact of new information and communication technologies on scholarly work.

This study was limited to astronomy and astrophysics libraries and information centres in India.

This paper identifies the information needs of the users. Each community and discipline has its own specific legacy of journal structure, reading, publishing, and researching practices, and it will take trial and error to establish which kinds of e-journals are the most effective and useful.

Electronic information resources are proliferating, library collections are increasingly accessible via the Internet, and the number of end users who access library resources remotely is on the rise. Changes in user behavior drives a corresponding change in the way instructional programs must be delivered to meet the needs of remote library users. This study explored the usage and applications of barcode technologies through a survey carried out in eight libraries in Dhaka City of Bangladesh. The survey included the following: Inception year, software used to barcode, areas in which barcodes are being used in libraries, training of library staff, and satisfaction of users and information professionals. Recommender systems can be a powerful tool for digital libraries if they implement the systems right to information seekers. While patrons have shown an increased interest in recommender systems, digital libraries ought to offer personalized services and assist users both novice and experienced with more sophisticate information retrieval technologies. Understanding user needs has always been the key to building relevant collections and designing appropriate services. The availability of electronic resources and the many choices of format and access methods have made understanding library users even more critical. Librarians can use formal and informal methods to gather information about users. Formal methods include surveys and focus groups. The information gathered can be used for selection and service. It should also be used to reshape the scholarly information system to better meet the needs of undergraduates and researchers, beginning users and sophisticated users’ and users who are doing in-depth research and those who just want a small amount of information quickly.  相似文献

Information overload interferes with our abilities to use information effectively. It represents a challenge in searching print as well as online collections. Academic librarians have developed strategies to help their patrons reduce the effects of information overload. This article provides best practices employed by academic librarians to reduce their users’ information overload. Five themes emerged in a review of the literature: information presentation, library instruction, user strategies, librarian roles, and software technologies. Information literacy instruction remains particularly important in combating information overload since the promotion of users’ research skills facilitates their search competencies. Research on information problem solving that focuses on metacognitive strategies may help decrease information overload among users searching digital libraries.  相似文献

Academic libraries have a long history of commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accommodation and are frequently models for other academic departments and outside industries. For example, libraries often consider users with disabilities and work to adapt services, collections, and technologies to increase accessibility for as many users as possible. Libraries also take care to accommodate employees with disabilities, but like many other industries, often unintentionally perceive disabilities only as ones that are immediately visible. This column will discuss the unique challenges that library employers may face when needing to accommodate employees with invisible disabilities, provide a selected overview of the literature surrounding invisible disabilities and library employees, and give selected tips to help library employers and employees better understand and accommodate employees with invisible disabilities.  相似文献

随着手持终端和移动互联网的发展,APP以其便捷、迅速、可个性化定制推送等特点在信息服务和知识传播领域得到广泛应用。国外图书馆提供的APP移动服务包括基本移动业务、数字资源推送、用户社区服务、科普游戏社区等。目前我国只有少数图书馆尝试了利用APP等新技术手段提供服务,并且其中大多服务是传统服务的延伸,其内容、形式比较单一。图书馆应通过关注用户潜在移动信息需求、挖掘并集成馆藏特色资源、拓展服务功能、注重与第三方技术合作、加强市场营销和推广等策略推进国内图书馆APP移动服务的进程。  相似文献

Strategic planning requires us to stop and take a closer look at our organizations and consider the impact that changes in the profession are causing, influenced by the society around us. These considerations lead us past our library walls, past our institutional walls and into a more speculative world of changes in the technological society. Scholars and pundits have provided us with many scenarios for the future, including a world of solely electronic resources and hyper-connected users. But how closely does this match reality and what are the trends in our larger society that will affect how we work in the future. This article provides an overview of several reports on the students and technologies that we work with and closely explores the IFLA Trend Report. The report was developed after discussions with individuals representing many non-academic, non-library organizations and provides us with a view of the larger trends forecast for the information society. The report is envisioned as a living document that invites further comment and wider distribution to the library world and beyond.  相似文献
