Due to the proliferation of electronic resources, fewer users visit the library. Traditional classroom instruction and in-person consultations are no longer sufficient in assisting library users. Librarians are constantly seeking new ways to interact with patrons and facilitate efficient use of electronic resources. This article describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of a project in which desktop-sharing software was used to reach out to users at remote locations. Various ways of using this tool are described, and challenges and implications for future expansion are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The article relates how the Brooklyn Campus Library of Long Island University, despite limitations of physical distance and the varying conditions of the remote graduate campus at Westchester, makes every effort to face each challenge creatively with practical solutions for implementation. We share our findings and experiences—what worked and what did not—and what remains to be done in terms of supporting the curricula and bringing library resources and services to a mixture of remote site users. The authors recount how the gap between reality and the ideal is reduced and unique issues relevant to remote users are resolved by the Brooklyn Campus Library, in collaboration with other units of Long Island University. We relate how we combine library instruction with our marketing efforts to promote library resources and services. We also analyze survey data and interlibrary loan statistics to assess our success. The article contributes to the ongoing discussion of improving and promoting library resources and services to remote sites.  相似文献

Abstract

Students and faculty have come to expect off-campus access to the full portfolio of electronic resources made available by their library. They demand, and should be provided, simple access to electronic information sources 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, regardless of their location. Proxy servers have been the solution of choice for remote authentication for some time now, but library users tend to have difficulty with manually configured proxies, and there are beginning to be robust alternatives that can provide secure off-campus access to library resources. Remote authentication should not be a matter of getting a proxy server running and then forgetting about it. New developments should be investigated to ensure the easiest, most reliable and most secure access possible-in the interests of libraries and their users.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The past ten years have seen remote access to electronic resources emerge as the preferred method of use for many, if not most, library patrons. Unfortunately, the misuse of the Internet has also led to a culture in which many personal computer users feel they must install accessory programs that complicate the normal processes associated with the retrieval of Web-based information. Various programs that users install, often with the best of intentions, can interfere with the authentication processes that many libraries and their vendors use. An exploration of firewalls, ad-blockers, pop-up blockers, Web accelerators, and similar software will examine the complications caused by popular programs in each category when users attempt remote access to library-provided information resources. Additional exploration will focus on similar complications experienced by users behind workplace firewalls. Discussion of each type of software will include minimally invasive remedies to recommend to users and suggestions for managing the technical support burden. Particular attention will focus on the interaction of firewalls and related software with popular remote access solutions such as EZproxy. Finally, analysis of this situation will include consideration of human factors, including suggested messages to convey to skeptical patrons and network administrators.  相似文献

Following in the same tradition of seamlessly providing access to library resources to our remote users, our campus has now taken the next logical step in also providing an orientation for new faculty teaching online as well as those teaching at our international campus locations. Without this type of orientation program, new faculty often feel isolated and left to navigate various systems, including library resources, the learning management system, student information systems, early alert tools, etc., completely on their own. Providing an orientation to this audience helps bring them together and allows them to acclimate to the various campus systems in an easier and much-less frustrating manner.  相似文献

Academic library home pages are not only access points to the resources and services of a library, they are virtual representations of the library itself. The content placed on the page, where it is placed, and the amount of space allotted are all choices that send a message about the character of the library, the resources a user should start with, and the library's attitude toward its users. This study explores the messages being sent by the content selection and design of the home pages of 49 of the 50 largest academic libraries in the United States. By looking at the area allocated to different content types and the number and location of different content types, the researchers discovered that design elements and promotion/public relations receive a large amount of page space. The researchers also identified the prominently positioned multi-search box as the apparent de facto standard access point to library resources. Many sites are clearly designed to direct users to specific, presumably important resources. Other sites are more obscure in their site structure and design, increasing the options and visual clutter for users without providing much guidance.  相似文献

向用户提供浏览器扩展组件是图书馆方便用户利用图书馆的方式之一。用户通过这种方式,可以不必中断在互联网上正进行的科研过程,只需在当前浏览的窗口上点击一下鼠标,就可以检索和利用图书馆的资源。这种采用客户端技术加强图书馆服务能力的做法在国外已有较普遍的应用,也是目前图书馆将那些被互联网拉走的用户拉回到图书馆的举措之一。该文将浏览器扩展组件在图书馆的应用情况进行了汇总,还对北京师范大学图书馆采用LibX的应用情况进行了概要描述,该馆的LibX突破了只有SFX的源资源才能生成SFX链接的限制,将链接服务扩展到任意页面。LibX将读者的互联网阅读过程和图书馆OPAC检索、电子期刊检索、OpenURL链接服务以及WorldCatxISBN服务等多种功能和服务整合在一起,提高了读者对图书馆资源的检索效率和水平。  相似文献

The increasingly electronic environment in today's academic library is placing new demands on managing reference services. Staff are faced with selecting, implementing, and servicing a wide range of services and resources. This necessitates learning the new and integrating it into the established. At the same time, users are becoming more varied. Not only is their demographic profile changing, but more users with interdisciplinary interests are seeking assistance. Reference librarians are also working to establish new interfaces with the increasing number of users who wish to access resources without coming into the library. This article addresses the management of reference services in a medium-sized research library to meet these needs. This paper explores the trend toward centralization of library services resulting from the impact of technology and economic conditions on today's research institutions. It contends that earlier predictions indicating library services would became more decentralized due to automation have not held true. Instead, as remote access to libraries and electronic databases becomes more popular, it appears to be the users who are increasingly decentralized rather than the collections and services. The growing trend toward centralization is reflected in the growing consolidation of science and technology departmental libraries into either one central sci/tech library or the integration of departmental collections into the main library collection. Economic factors, organizational patterns, and library users have also contributed to the increased use of the centralization model. The merging of services and library functions are also discussed. A possible scenario for future library organization is provided.  相似文献
