Cultural differences have a great effect on English learning,especially on college English reading.Reading is a crucial tool in acquiring information and knowledge.Culture cannot be separated from language.College English reading should focus on the differences of culture.It is important to understand how to lay stress on the differences in the course of college English teaching and learning about reading for increasing students’ ability of reading.This thesis analyzes the influence of culture on English reading and tries to set up a principle of teaching English through culture.To support my point of view,the relationship between language and culture is discussed first.Language is a part of culture and shaped by culture;it is also the carrier of culture and reflects cultural features of a community in which the language is spoken.Language and culture are closely related with each other.From the aspect of language teaching and learning,to teach a foreign language is to teach another culture;to learn a language is also to learn another culture.  相似文献

Whether it is business English or business in English has remained a discrepancy for both linguists and learners. Researchers have been approaching from various aspects such as lexicon, semantics or syntax, etc. in order to define business English from general English but hardly has a clear-cut division been drawn out yet. So analysis of the stylistic features of the language used in business settings is made to illustrate that BE is by no means a simple combination of business and English, and successful acquisition of business English requires the learner’s awareness of business English vocabulary so as to further improve their international business ability to use language-related tactics to get results.  相似文献

It is known that the IELTS test has not been a good predictor of English capability in academic settings. More information is required. Are students not motivated to keep improving their English; what obstacles do they face? The English language issues facing international students from China at one University are explored through a survey and focus groups. It is observed that a lack of motivation is not the key factor. Rather one core problem is the very difficult demands of acculturation within a short time frame which would enable confidence for the students to continue to engage with other English speaking students. When faced with such immediate and hard to achieve acculturation, many retreat to their language groups. In the academic context, support for the transition to discipline based academic genres is double difficult as the time frame for second language learners is longer, but performance requirements are more immediate. Many first language students also have difficulties in this area, but have the easier language path to mastery. The study draws usefully on a comparison made with students studying English in China.  相似文献

With the rapid development of the society, people are expected to improve their language quality as well. So when people have to express something unpleasant, they prefer to employ some mild, implicit and euphemistic expressions. Meanwhile,an increasing number of scientists indulge themselves in studying English euphemisms from different perspectives, such as linguistics, pragmatics, and psychology and so on. English Euphemisms applied in class can not only help create a relaxing and lively atmosphere but also protect the students’ self-esteem and stimulate their interests in English. However, the researches on the effects of applying English euphemisms in English class are few. Language is the product of social being. The communicative language between China and Britain need be familiar with two spo ken and written languages as well as solid educational experience. There are a lot of oral speaking in both Chinese and English. Due to the regional culture, history culture, customs ,religious belief and historical allusion varied, the oral speaking also presents lots of cultural differ ences. By comparing the linguistic behavior in oral speaking between English and Chinese, this paper tries to discuss the difference between them and the cultural otherness it reflects. English is not only a language tool,but also an ideological tool.Vocabulary of the language can faithfully reflect the culture it serves such as sexism.The oxford advanced learner’s dictionary explains it as below:the unfair treatment of people,especially women,because of their sex.Sexism is a social phenomenon which has a long history.It has been hiding in language and culture with the mainstream thinking.And it can be discovered from vocabularies,proverbs practical applications and metaphors.The present report aims to research the values of sexism through the mirror of English language.Furthermore,we will learn the social circumstances and reasons of this phenomenon.And we can make a more clear understanding of the state of women in English language countries.In this research,literature review and analysis are adopted.The findings are as follows:sexism real exists in many aspects of English language.There are many reasons accounting for this phenomenon like culture factors,history factors,psychological factors,political factors and so on.It may still last for a long time.However,the gradual change of sexism will be the tendency.Basing on the results of this research,sexism plays an important role in communication,education and literature.So the more you know it,the better you will avoid trouble.Therefore,the present research has important practical significances.  相似文献

Multimodal as digital literacies are,they have still been text-based.It has been a great concern that due to the popularity of speech-like writing style online,digital literacies have brought informal speech expressions into formal standard writing,and thus increasing the possibility to ruin the standard writing language.On the other hand,although there are moral panics of the survival of standard written languages,scholars and popular media show great tolerance for online languages.In addition,it has been proved that some frequent participants in digital literacies nowadays are capable of both online language and standard offline language,indicating that they are well aware of the different registers of language use and therefore of high language literacy.Furthermore,researches suggest several possible merits of digital literacies,including saving young people from social isolation and depression,providing people with more opportunities to learn new things and to practice the instructional writing,calling for thorough consideration and elaborate editing and encouraging brief and clear writing style.  相似文献

After China’s entry into the WTO,the interchange and communication between China and the international community has increased,which exerts great influence on pushing forward the modernization and construction of the various industries in China and requires a large number of people with good command of English.Under these circumstances,English education becomes extremely important.Guangxi,an old revolutionary base area inhabited by minority ethnic groups,is falling behind with its economy,culture and education in comparison with eastern regions of China.A number of English teachers,especially those in middle schools of the rural areas,are provided with little education and few opportunities for advanced study;most of them lack the new teaching ideas,models or methods which could replace the traditional teaching model that centers on the teacher and textbook.As a result,students can’t give full play to their subjective initiative with low communication and application capability in English.To confer impetus to English language teaching reform,researchers and scholars have made great efforts in experimenting various teaching models with the hope to find a language teaching model which can meet the demands of the new era and B-SLIM model put forward by Dr.Olenka Bilash is such a model.  相似文献

Cooperative principle and politeness principle enjoy great significance in pragmatic field.Via the analysis of certain examples extracted from Business English course-book, this paper aims to study the observance of cooperative principle and politeness principle. The conclusion is reached that the application of CP and PP in pedagogical practice could benefit students’ language application.
