This study reports how internationalization of academic knowledge is reflected in the language choice of Korean academic journals across disciplines and examines perceptions and practices of eighty two faculty from various disciplines at three Korean universities concerning publishing in English journals. The results indicate that natural science has the highest percentage of English-medium journals whereas those in humanities and social science predominantly use Korean as a medium of publication. Similar disciplinary patterns are observed in the responses to survey questions about frequency of publication as well as desire and preference for publishing papers in English. The biggest motivation for Korean scholars to publish in English was the desire to reach global scholarly communities. Implications of these findings are discussed. 相似文献

[目的/意义]基于成果特征标识学者的学术专长是学者画像的重要任务,对学者分类、评审专家遴选、发现小同行等应用具有重要价值。[方法/过程]首先分析揭示学术专长的因素,用层次分析法构造专长标签权重分配模型;采用TextRank和概念链接技术从中英文成果内容中识别主题术语,结合权重筛选出具有领域共识和专长概括性的词汇作为专长标签。选取获得人才称号的多个领域科研人员,从中文或英文代表成果中提取专长标签,以人才公示中的专长领域作为对照基准,通过人工打分和语义计算评测识别效果。[结果/结论]在被贴中文专长标签的学者中,71.9%的个体的专长描述被认为满意。在被贴英文专长标签的学者中,77.2%的个体的专长描述被认为满意。实验表明提出的学者学术专长识别方法具有合理性。主要创新在于：在中英文不同语种以及是否存在外部知识库的条件下,提出从文献内容中挖掘候选标签词的解决方案;结合计量因素,用多种成果特征筛选专长标签,并提出权重分配的方案;针对评价基准欠缺的问题,提出基于语义计算的方式补充答案,从而扩充评价手段。 相似文献

下载免费PDF全文 This article reports a study into 60 research articles (RAs) authored by Iranian medical researchers and published in high‐quality international English journals. It investigated how academic professionals in medical sciences implement peer convenience editing (CE) to improve articles and make them suitable for publication. The research identified nine editing interventions that were categorized as micro‐ or macro‐editing strategies. The findings indicated that the most frequently used strategies are micro‐strategies of substitution, addition, and mechanical alteration. The study also found that the abstract received the majority of editorial changes (mostly micro), followed by the introduction and then the discussion sections. The findings may help authors and institutions identify which sections and which types of editorial interventions are most likely to be required to ensure that RAs are optimized for publishing in international journals. 相似文献

Scale development involves numerous theoretical, methodological, and statistical competencies. Despite the central role that scales play in our predictions, scholars often apply measurement building procedures that are inconsistent with best practices. The defaults in statistical programs, inadequate training, and numerous evaluation points can lead to improper practices. Based on a quantitative content analysis of communication journal articles, scholars have improved very little in the communication of their scale development decisions and practices. To address these reoccurring issues, this article breaks down and recommends 10 steps to follow in the scale development process for researchers unfamiliar with the process. Furthermore, the present research makes a unique contribution by overviewing procedures scholars should employ to develop their dimensions and corresponding items. The overarching objective is to encourage the adoption of scale development best practices that yield stronger concepts, and in the long run, a more stable foundation of knowledge. 相似文献

Reports a 1995 survey of Wisconsin academic libraries regarding collection development practices in the subjects of languages and literature. In general, libraries rely heavily on faculty selections and course- relatedness, buying almost exclusively current English language material. An analysis of OCLC holdings indicates that Choice's 1993 “Outstanding Academic Books” are not widely held, confirming the survey results showing an emphasis on local demand over presumed quality. 相似文献

Interlending Services: Trends,Languages, and use for Collection Development at North-West University

This paper uses the bibliometrics methods to analyse the interlending service trends, language and collection development at the North-West University. The results show that despite some challenges, ILS services at the NWU decreased. More than 98.5% of all documents requested are in English language followed by Setswana and Afrikaans. Out of the 535 books requested by the Mafikeng Campus, 138 were added to the collection of the library. These results point to a need for academic libraries in Africa to adopt strategies for the development of African languages. The results support the continued use of ILS data for collection development purposes. 相似文献

This paper provides a theoretical, methodological, and practical contribution to the debate about strategies for the divulgation of the Italian technical literature of the eighteenth century in English-speaking countries with attention to the Italian universities and cultural institutions of the time. The paper contains a survey of the historical bibliography of contemporary translations of non-technical treatises of architecture in the English language and it proceeds to draw up a set of guidelines (decalogue) of different recently proposed methodologies and strategies. It describes the selection of the treatise to translate, relevant to the context and authoritative knowledge in the European scientific background of the eighteenth century; it continues by proposing a synopsis of the original text in the Italian modern language, a strategy used in order to make historical technical treatises accessible to the contemporary scientific Italian language. Approaches and strategies are experimented with in the case study of Historic Memories about the Great Dome of the Vatican Church (Le Memorie Istoriche della Gran Cupola Vaticana) by Giovanni Poleni, one of the most authoritative scholars of eighteenth-century Europe. 相似文献

[目的/意义]调研中外科研人员对社交网络的认知情况，对学术工作者使用社交网络的目的、动机和需求开展比较研究。[方法/过程]利用问卷调查法收集来自国内各大高校707位被调查者对社交网络的认知、使用动机和访问信息，并将问卷调查结果与Nature研究结果进行比较。[结果/结论]结果显示，我国科研人员对学术社交网络的使用率和使用意识并不是很高，国内科研人员比较倾向于使用以社交型为导向的网站，对以学术型为导向的网站使用较少。国外主流ASNS平台中，我国用户对ResearchGate具有一定的认知度。 相似文献

An increased interest in studying the nature of communication in health care and the use of interpreters has revealed the need for more collaboration and understanding of multilingual health-care practices. Theory and practice concerning cross-cultural health-care communication can benefit from examining the intersections between translingual literacy and transnational programs through hybrid interpretive strategies. In this study, I argue that these strategies move across, between, and among different languages, dialects, and nonverbal gestures to develop mutual understanding. To account for literacy practices that might engage this hybridity in health care, I use grounded practical theory to analyze a case study of participants who ran temporary medical and dental clinics in the Dominican Republic. This analysis finds that hybrid strategies with English–Spanish and Spanish–Spanish interpretation are used to overcome problems with balancing efficiency and rapport-building. By integrating ethnographic methods and grounded practical theory, this study's practical implications emerge in the negotiations of language employed by participants to connect translingual theory and practice in health-care communication. 相似文献

In response to the increased use and study of video games in academic work, academic libraries have started building or have expanded their video game collections. Collection development practices, however, have focused on collecting video games based on their format and not on their subject and disciplinary content. The authors of this article suggest that video games, while “read” differently than monographs, can communicate knowledge in unambiguous and discipline specific ways. Using the discipline of history as an example, the authors examined four World War II commercial video games to see how well these games communicated discipline-specific knowledge. Although none of the four video games evaluated would be identified as scholarly, two of the video games could be considered as sources of historical knowledge. As scholars begin to explore the creation and use of video games as secondary or tertiary sources in addition to primary sources or objects of study, academic libraries should include video games in their collections based on the video games' disciplinary content and the scholarly arguments that they present. The authors recommend a process for evaluating video games that could be used for most academic disciplines. 相似文献

Cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) has so far been studied with the assumption that some rich linguistic resources such as bilingual dictionaries or parallel corpora are available. But creation of such high quality resources is labor-intensive and they are not always at hand. In this paper we investigate the feasibility of using only comparable corpora for CLIR, without relying on other linguistic resources. Comparable corpora are text documents in different languages that cover similar topics and are often naturally attainable (e.g., news articles published in different languages at the same time period). We adapt an existing cross-lingual word association mining method and incorporate it into a language modeling approach to cross-language retrieval. We investigate different strategies for estimating the target query language models. Our evaluation results on the TREC Arabic–English cross-lingual data show that the proposed method is effective for the CLIR task, demonstrating that it is feasible to perform cross-lingual information retrieval with just comparable corpora. 相似文献

2001年以来,刊登英文文章的农业期刊数每年都有50种以上;但问卷调查结果显示,62.98%的读者认为中文农业学术期刊上"没有必要"刊登英文文章,71.83%的读者表示"基本或从来不阅读"这类文章,表示"偶尔阅读"和"经常阅读"者只分别占23.20%和4.97%.国际检索系统收录情况查询结果表明,是否刊登英文文章以及刊登英文文章的年限和数量均与中文农业学术期刊进入国际检索系统没有必然的联系.这些调研结果说明,中文农业期刊刊登英文文章的价值不大. 相似文献
