ABSTRACT

Citation analysis is a popular research method in library science, often used to evaluate collections and instructional services. There are multiple advantages to combining citation analysis with qualitative research methods. This article describes a study in which Capstone projects by graduating undergraduate students in the social sciences were examined using both citation analysis and focus groups. The goal of this research was to gain a greater understanding of the types of sources used by advanced undergraduates in the social sciences, the library-provided availability of those sources, and a sense of how these students find, evaluate, and select sources for their Capstone projects. Notable findings include the heavy reliance of students on journal articles and the large influence of professors and other mentors on students' citation behavior.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The article offers a current perspective on medical informatics and health sciences librarianship. NARRATIVE: The authors: (1) discuss how definitions of medical informatics have changed in relation to health sciences librarianship and the broader domain of information science; (2) compare the missions of health sciences librarianship and health sciences informatics, reviewing the characteristics of both disciplines; (3) propose a new definition of health sciences informatics; (4) consider the research agendas of both disciplines and the possibility that they have merged; and (5) conclude with some comments about actions and roles for health sciences librarians to flourish in the biomedical information environment of today and tomorrow. SUMMARY: Boundaries are disappearing between the sources and types of and uses for health information managed by informaticians and librarians. Definitions of the professional domains of each have been impacted by these changes in information. Evolving definitions reflect the increasingly overlapping research agendas of both disciplines. Professionals in these disciplines are increasingly functioning collaboratively as "boundary spanners," incorporating human factors that unite technology with health care delivery.  相似文献

This guest column details the experience of an early career academic librarian learning how to instruct and assist students in health sciences programs. It includes information on mentoring, peer coaching, formal and informal trainings, and proficiencies needed for reference and instruction services. The author shares sources of specific knowledge and skills that empowered her to transition to health sciences librarianship.  相似文献

This article examines the idiosyncratic development of Israel's communication field against the backdrop of the field's main structural dilemmas: (a) emphasis on research orientation versus on professional journalistic training and (b) firm boundaries for the field based on its mother disciplines (humanities or social sciences) versus open boundaries adopting different disciplines' research topics/methods that touch on communication phenomena. The article suggests a theoretical framework based on criteria anchored in the sociology of science and then applies these criteria to an analysis of the institutionalization and development of the Communication Institute at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from its foundation in 1964 through the 1990s. The study is based on documents from the university archive and the Guttman Institute for Applied Social Research, curricula and catalogs of communication departments in Israel, and interviews with senior researchers in the field.  相似文献

Due in large part to the interdisciplinary nature of the profession, Home Economics reference collections are often difficult to develop, maintain, and assess. Collection development responsibilities are usually divided among several librarians across the broad spectrum of the social sciences, humanities, and applies sciences. To help ensure basic and balanced collections, a "core" bibliography of home economics reference sources is provided. The included works are listed alphabetically under the broad categories of "Indexes and Abstracts," "Dictionaries and Encyclopedias," and "Handbooks and Sourcebooks." This bibliography should be used as a starting framework for a basic home economics reference collection. Individual libraries might further develop specific subject areas to support their own institution's needs.  相似文献

Research methodologies in several of the social sciences require the use of tests. When assisting social science researchers who seek information on tests, reference librarians do no, themselves, always have direct access to the instruments. Librarians should not only have the knowledge that various print and electronic database resources are available to gain needed information, but they should also have a strategy by which these sources can be searched in an expedient and thorough manner. This paper offers such a search strategy which can be used with the materials commonly found in a large research or a specialized test library.  相似文献

Increasingly library patrons are approaching reference desks seeking access to basic legal documents and commentary. Such is especially the case in the behavioral and social sciences, where the changing legal scene has its greatest impact. This article presents a fundamental guide to the primary and secondary materials that comprise the literature of the law. Included are recommendations for the acquisition of these materials depending on the needs of a given library.  相似文献

As the health care industry becomes more business oriented, health sciences librarians will encounter more patrons seeking business information. Administrators and managers of health care facilities are primarily in need of business information. This paper discusses those resources with which health sciences librarians must be familiar to successfully meet the challenges of these new demands. It identifies traditional and online sources, and emphasizes business sources geared to the health care industry. The business managers of the health care facility represent a new patron market for the health sciences librarian.  相似文献

Electronic journals are now the norm for accessing and reading scholarly articles. This article examines scholarly article reading patterns by faculty in five US universities in 2012. Selected findings are also compared to some general trends from studies conducted periodically since 1977. In the 2012 survey, over three‐quarters (76%) of the scholarly readings were obtained through electronic means and just over half (51%) of readings were read on a screen rather than from a print source or being printed out. Readings from library sources are overwhelmingly from e‐sources. The average number of articles read per month was 20.66, with most articles read by the medical and other sciences, and on average each article was read for 32 minutes.  相似文献

Abstract

This article presents a selection of web-based reference resources in the earth and physical sciences, focusing in particular on geology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and weather. Such a compilation is designed to be of use in meeting a wide range of informational needs in these areas. Sites chosen by the authors are those likely to be of broad interest. In addition, most or all of the contents of the resources listed are available for free.  相似文献

Online users seek help from virtual reference services via email, phone, texting, and live chat. Technologies have enabled new features in library websites to help make this service more accessible and effective. This article is an evaluation of an experimental pop-up live chat box on the website of a health sciences library to see whether the feature would enhance virtual reference services.  相似文献

This article describes how the reference department at a large academic health sciences library evolved to address the clinical and research information needs of the parent organization without losing its close connections to the classroom and curriculum. Closing the reference desk, moving to on-call and house call models, designing positions such as clinical research librarian and basic biomedical sciences librarian, finding alternative funding to grow the department, providing technology and training to facilitate librarians' work, and developing programming for and taking advice from library clients facilitated efforts to create a relevant presence and solidify the library's place in the university community.  相似文献

A recent survey revealed that very few libraries were doing any significant weeding in their reference collections. Yet weeding the reference collection may have as great an impact on the library as a whole as weeding the general collection. This article discusses some of the author's experiences weeding the reference collection at Georgia State University and the ways in which general weeding concerns, such as planning for staffing, establishing criteria, and formulating selection policies, may be applied to the reference collection. Reference materials differ in nature and use from materials in the general collection, and this article analyses the impact these differences have on the weeding effort.  相似文献

Business school graduates often lack basic communicative competence in the sciences. Business librarians and business education should respond to the needs of rapidly growing science-related industries by teaching students how to acquire basic knowledge in the sciences. Science reference materials found in most university libraries are an excellent source of basic scientific information. Information resources covering major areas of scientific inquiry are described int this article.  相似文献
