Abstract

Academic libraries have increasingly adopted web-scale discovery tools in order to meet the expectations of students who want immediate results, efficient algorithms, and a single search box. As they have become the de facto search tool at many libraries, librarians and patrons alike have been forced to confront the way they think about research processes and in some cases, modulate ingrained habits. In this article, the authors explore student perceptions of efficacy, relevancy, and ease of use of a library discovery tool through a 2017 mixed-methods user experience study conducted at three City University of New York (CUNY) campuses. The results from this user study will be useful to other institutions that already have implemented discovery layers within their library and help inform website design, discovery layer design, and pedagogy. By combining student interviews with a task analysis, the authors were able to learn more about student search behaviors, how they respond to challenges, and what they expect from search tools. Identifying these barriers to student use of the Primo discovery tool has helped us articulate best practices for instruction and interface customization that may address these barriers and has illuminated implications for website integration.  相似文献

Within the next few years, traditional online public access catalogs will be replaced by more robust and interconnected discovery layers that can serve as primary public interfaces to simultaneously search many separate collections of resources. Librarians have envisioned this type of discovery tool since the 1980s, and research shows that discovery layer functionality and features have already resolved, or will soon remedy, many of the known issues with the traditional online public access catalog. The authors of this article review the literature on discovery, focusing on the evolution from the traditional online public access catalog to newer discovery interfaces, and summarize what has been published regarding the selection and evaluation of these new tools. Based on this review, emerging trends in the acquisition of discovery layers are described, including: the amount of time libraries devote to selection and evaluation, the staff involved and their areas of expertise, which discovery tools were selected to review, the evaluation methods used, and the features and functionality evaluated. The authors conclude with a discussion of the opportunities and concerns for libraries and their patrons related to discovery efforts, and provide direction for future research. While discovery layers are still developing, they show great promise in increasing the use and usability of library resources.  相似文献

Over the past decade, there has been an increase in the application of the case study method to investigate the process used by students in secondary school and undergraduate academic settings to locate and use information through the library. The case study method has, in most recent years compared to investigations of 20 to 30 years ago, become established as the primary research technique used to document student thought processes in topic focus and in source selection. Direct observation and interviewing successful library users, two tools common to the case study method, may also lead to examination of student selection and critical use of evidence for research projects as students move beyond the traditional library collection. These tools have also proven to be useful as researchers in recent studies are more interested in an analysis of student use of information as evidence rather than conducting studies which only document student location and citation of resources. Selected studies which illustrate this evolution are drawn from the dissertations and field studies related to secondary school and undergraduate bibliographic instruction.  相似文献

[目的/意义]信息搜索是人们常用的信息查询方法,目前搜索系统在查找事实型信息时支持效果较好,但是对人们以学习为目的的搜索功能还缺乏研究。"搜索即学习"(search as learning)是近年来交互式信息检索的研究热点,这类研究中将搜索看作学习的过程,并尝试对用户搜索中的知识学习进行评估,进而提出系统支持用户学习的功能优化建议。本文着重解决如何全面评估用户搜索前后的知识水平,为此类研究提供参考。[方法/过程]采用用户实验法,对用户搜索前和搜索后撰写的知识内容进行评估,提出综合数量与质量维度的用户知识评估方法,对用户在学习型任务搜索前后知识水平进行评估。数据分析阶段采用统计方法来验证用户搜索后与搜索前的知识水平差异。[结果/结论]研究发现,用户在知识数量上的表现随着搜索的完成而变得更加全面和深入,在知识点数量、知识面数量、知识面广度和知识面深度上都有显著的提升。同时,在搜索后产生了专业度较高的知识面。对于搜索前较模糊的某些概念,在搜索后表达得更清晰明确。在质量上,搜索后绝大多数的用户都在知识的相关性、分析程度及用户观点的提出方面有所提升。  相似文献

随着电子引文信息的爆炸式增长,为了帮助科研工作者从海量文献数据中发现研究热点、了解领域发展趋势,科研机构和商业集团开发了一系列基于Web的文献检索工具.近年来,伴随着数据挖掘技术和信息可视化技术在知识发现领域中的迅速发展,融合上述两种技术的文献分析工具已经被研发出来并获得了很好的用户反馈.文章首先阐述了传统的文献检索工具的功能及其存在的局限性,调研了融合可视分析技术的文献分析工具并总结其功能和特点以及为文献分析带来的新颖视角,介绍北京邮电大学通信软件工程中心研发的可视分析组件--VisLib及其实用场景,最后展望了科技文献分析工具的进一步发展方向.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper details how stand-alone instructional elements became the foundation for a new inquiry-based blended learning approach to information literacy on our campus. Based on the information search process research of Kuhlthau and designed to be inserted into blended learning classes, an information literacy workshop consisting of both online and face-to-face components was developed. Rather than simply train students on specific research tools, the premise for the workshop is to lay a broader foundation for students' inquiry based on discovery. Web-scale discovery systems are gaining momentum among academic libraries as libraries seek a means to provide their users with a one-stop searching experience. Illinois State University's Milner Library found itself in the unique position of having access to two distinct discovery products, EBSCO Discovery Service and Serials Solutions’ Summon. Two researchers at Milner conducted a usability study for the former product in 2010, and now two other researchers, including one involved with the EBSCO Discovery Service study, have conducted the same study on the latter product. The goals of the study were twofold: first, to identify user behavior while using discovery systems’ search features and to see whether using these features would improve the user's searching experience, and second, to compare user experiences with EBSCO Discovery Service and Summon at Illinois State University. The similarities and differences in user expectations, use, manipulation, and satisfaction with both discovery tools are explored in this article, with the ancillary hope that libraries investigating discovery tools might be able to make a more thoroughly informed choice in acquiring their own Web-scale discovery system.  相似文献

This paper describes a study of undergraduate student search behaviour, examines the results through the lens of various disciplines, and provides new insights that will increase our understanding and facilitate the development of more effective instructional programmes. Perspectives and research results drawn from multiple disciplines are used to explore the role of mental models, reference groups and habits, and intellectual development in the search behaviour demonstrated by the undergraduate students. During interviews conducted as part of the study, many students were able to articulate the importance of source evaluation and describe electronically-appropriate methods for assessing the authority and reliability of Web-based information resources. In practice, however, these students frequently abandoned source evaluation altogether and, following the path of least resistance, relied exclusively on basic Google searching. This approach both compromised the quality of their search results and contributed to frustration with the research process. This may not be extraordinarily unusual behaviour, but it is cause for considerable concern among information literacy programme planners and instructors. Discussion of the study results and related research is followed by pragmatic suggestions for modifying ineffective search behaviour through enhanced instructional programmes.  相似文献

Some librarians embrace discovery tools while others refuse to use them. This lack of consensus can have consequences for student learning when there is inconsistent use, especially in large-scale instruction programs. The authors surveyed academic librarians whose institutions have a discovery tool and who teach information literacy classes in order to identify barriers to using them and to develop strategies to effectively integrate them into instruction. The authors used the survey results and recent studies on the research habits of undergraduates to propose strategies for integrating the discovery tool at the programmatic level in a more meaningful and sustainable way.  相似文献

The College of St. Benedict and St. John's University Library have used WorldCat Local as a discovery tool since 2008. After four years of use and numerous anecdotes about the difficulties encountered with this product, a committee was formed to test the tool's usability and effectiveness. Seven female and six male students were asked to find appropriate materials within WorldCat Local for a mock research assignment. The students’ research and thought processes were recorded and studied. The recordings were analyzed by the committee, and the search strategies as well as the materials selected by the students were evaluated and scored. Although the sample size limits generalizability, the videos provided an in-depth look into the students’ research processes and their evaluation of what they found. Students generally fared well when asked to identify suitable books for their research topic, but they encountered many difficulties interpreting article records and identifying appropriate articles. Some WorldCat Local interface features appeared to be either the source of student problems or were not used effectively. Anyone wanting to replicate this study in his or her own evaluation of a discovery tool will want to be aware of the issues encountered in this evaluation of WorldCat Local.  相似文献

This project studies the use of multi-modal media objects in an online information literacy class. One hundred sixty-two undergraduate students answered seven surveys. Significant relationships are found among computer skills, teaching materials, communication tools and learning experience. Broad and discipline-specific information literacy competencies must be mastered by science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students. This study assessed changes in student perceptions of their competency in information literacy after continuous efforts in course curriculum. Data were gathered in 2015–2016 from first year interdisciplinary project-based courses with STEM students to assess changes in information literacy competencies. Analyses suggested there was a significant increase in students' perception of their familiarity with library resources, search strategies, citation use, and ability to evaluate source quality. There was no change in their perception of their ability to evaluate the variety of source and source relevance and a decrease in their perception of the ethical use of information. With faculty-librarian partnership and integrated instruction in a first year course, students showed the largest perceived increases in foundational information literacy skills but struggled with information literacy abilities. This study provides a baseline of information literacy competencies of first year students and provides recommendations for continuing education.  相似文献

Exploring benefits and drawbacks of using a librarian role-playing method to assess student information literacy competencies enables researchers to move beyond existing methods that tend to rely on self-reports of attitude, confidence, and behavior. Two empirical studies are presented in which a librarian role-playing activity was employed along with card-sorting exercises and interviews. Thirty-two first- and second year undergraduate students participated in these two studies, during which they were instructed to imagine themselves as librarians and demonstrate how they would assist users in searching for information (Study 1) and evaluating particular sources (Study 2). Findings indicate that college students are able to use the role-playing method to perform, demonstrate, and explain their search behavior and source evaluation strategies without difficulty or discomfort. Results show that this method is effective for eliciting student reflections on and understandings of their own information literacy competencies.  相似文献

Library orientations are a very common learning experience for residential and online students. These all have similar goals of introducing students to the library and helping them feel more comfortable in navigating the library. The Library Connection is a unique type of library orientation that provides meaningful feedback to students in a personalized, connected learning environment. This program is offered through digital badges. A conventional qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the text responses of students completing this orientation. Six interesting themes emerged from these data including student perceptions of the use of the library, developing advanced search techniques, and managing a complex information environment. Interesting trends include the disparities between student and instructor perspectives of their learning and the need for a hybrid orientation that provides scaled instruction while still giving meaningful feedback and personalized responses to students from librarians.  相似文献

Librarians provide instruction to medical students as part of a core course in the medical school curriculum. Instruction was provided, in part, through didactic sessions covering professional-level medical information resources, PubMed search skills, psychosocial information, and evidence-based medicine. Librarians redesigned instructional sessions with the goals of increasing student engagement and minimizing the lecture format, maximizing the number of students receiving feedback on their search and evaluation skills, and permitting students to see a variety of possible responses as well as engage in peer- and self-evaluation. Librarians integrated the use of a blog and an audience response system (ARS) into the instruction to help accomplish these goals.  相似文献
