Librarians located in a 560-bed, inner city academic medical center with 25,000?+ admissions per year planned and opened a Patient and Family Education Center (PFEC) in the lobby of a new patient care pavilion. A review of use in the first 19 months revealed that expected needs were being met while a variety of unexpected needs were identified. Ongoing use continues to be monitored by a detailed log of patron visits maintained by library staff. This article describes the evolution of the Patient and Family Education Center, outreach to the hospital community, and plans for the future. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The Education, Job and Computer Center is a unique resource center which is located in the Central Library of the Brooklyn Public Library. The mission of this division is to provide the people of Brooklyn with the print and electronic resources that they can use to further their education or to seek employment. In the past year, the Education, Job and Computer Center served over ninety-five thousand individuals. The Education, Job and Computer Center (EJCC) receives an average of 300 queries a week from patrons seeking information on employment, job training or educational opportunities. As a way to respond to many identical requests, the EJCC staff has created a series of twenty referral lists. Subjects covered by these lists include GED or ESL classes; services to immigrants, services for older adults, youth, women and ex-offenders; job placement or job training centers; and small business assistance programs. The referral lists are updated annually. They can be picked up in the EJCC, or mailed to patrons upon request. The EJCC also supplies copies of the lists to the Brooklyn Public Library branches and to many community based organizations in the New York City area. Last year a total of 125,000 copies of the referral lists were produced. 相似文献

This article summarizes research findings on instructional strategies and textbook features that benefit diverse students.
It then reports the conduct and findings of a study in which educators, researchers, and publishers collaborated to improve
the usability of textbooks.
Jean Ciborowski was the director of the project “Improving Textbook Usability.” She currently directs the educational services
in the school function clinics at Boston Children’s Hospital. Mary Antes has served on a variety of curriculum development
and educational projects at Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), and was project assistant on the textbook project. Judith
Zorfass, technical monitor of the project, is currently directing two federally funded research projects at EDC. One studies
the integration of technology into the curriculum for handicapped adolescents and the other investigates reading development
in language disordered students.
Nancy Ames is director of EDC’s Center for Family, School, and Community, and helped in the initial design of the textbook

Although literature on rural libraries is abundant, there is a severe shortage of literature on the information needs of rural populations. This article presents an analysis of 33 studies on rural information needs identified from LISA–PLUS and the findings of a study of the information needs of the population of a cluster of three Malaysian villages with no library service. A total of 108 individuals from approximately 300 households were interviewed during February 1996. All the respondents are literate and show a strong interest in reading. Their top five information needs relate to: (1) Religious information; (2) Family bonding; (3) Current affairs; (4) Health information; and (5) Education. The top five purposes for seeking information were: (1) Fulfilment of the need to know; (2) Solving problems; (3) Self-development; (4) Establishing a better family; and (5) Work purposes. The top five sources of information were: (1) TV/Radio; (2) Friends/neighbours; (3) Printed materials; (4) Relatives from the city; and (5) the School (library). Should a library service be made available, 93.054% would be interested in using it. The results emphasize that the needs of the rural population must be carefully investigated when planning rural library services. 相似文献

Before planning for provision of Consumer Health Information Services, the librarian and administration must anticipate the problems encountered in sharing funds, personnel, space, and materials with an existing medical or patient education library. Establishing new space within or outside the hospital, or participating in community projects which meet consumer health information needs, are important considerations for planners. This article sets forth the place of some CHI services in the hospital setting, and how they relate to other library services. A grant from the Center for International Business Education at the University of Michigan made possible a visit to the Commonwealth of Independent States to discover sources of information for investors in those nations. Visits were made to such libraries as the Russian State Library, to locate sources of information about the evolving economy there. These works, including periodicals, statistical works, tools on economic theory, conditions, and commerce, dictionaries, and bibliographies, are described. The Health Education Center in Pittsburgh, a community-based health promotion agency which provides library services to health professionals, students, and the lay public, received a resource grant in 1981 from the National Library of Medicine to study professionals' awareness of consumer health information (CHI) materials for their patients and clients. A survey of telephone patrons and on-site library patrons provided details on health professionals' use of the CHI resource center: their areas of interest, the material formats they preferred, and the intended use of the materials. Health professionals' demand for information about consumer-oriented materials and their satisfaction with the HEC library suggest that such a resource can be a valuable asset to a community. 相似文献

Instructional librarians at the University of Washington Undergraduate Library and The Evergreen State College Library have received seed grant funding from the Washington State Center for the Improvement of Quality of Undergraduate Education to sponsor two seminars and a small conference on linking library instruction to undergraduate teaching. The focus of the project is on critical thinking, evaluation of sources, and integration of library instruction into the curriculum. Emphasis will be placed on "critical thinking" and the larger context of the particular discipline. A major purpose is to develop a model program for use in other academic libraries. 相似文献

AIMS: To explore the information needs and information seeking behaviour of family doctors, identifying any differences in attitudes and behaviours deriving from membership of a training practice and investigating the impact of a practice librarian. METHODS: A case study of general practitioners (GPs) in Aylesbury Vale incorporated a quantitative study of use of the medical library, and two qualitative techniques, in-depth interviews and group discussions. RESULTS: A total of 58 GPs, almost three quarters of those in the Vale, participated; 19 via individual interviews and a further 39 via two group discussions. Family doctors are prompted to seek information by needs arising from a combination of professional responsibilities and personal characteristics. A need for problem-orientated information, related to the care of individual patients, was the predominant factor that prompted these GPs to seek information. Personal collections remain the preferred information resource; electronic sources rank second. The study demonstrated low use of the medical library. However, both vocational training and the employment of a practice librarian impacted on library use. CONCLUSIONS: The study illuminates the information needs and preferences of GPs and illustrates the contribution that librarians may make at practice level, indicating the importance of outreach work. 相似文献

Technology can bridge the gap in terms of access and use of library resources. Academic librarians working with distance students must examine their student population, determine the needs of their users, and be prepared to adapt technology available to meet those needs. Many academic libraries have adapted Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) ILLiad to allow better support of distance learners.
