Communication and cultural studies are implicated in environmental matters. Unsustainable practices are relevant, contingent, contextual, articulated, public, banal, extraordinary, embodied, affective, global/local, material technocultural relations that hold life itself at stake. Given residual and dominant ecological crises and environmental injustices, palpable pressure to intervene in the contemporary power shift exists. While we remain invested in mapping the dynamic relations that constitute specific cultural assemblages and provide the conditions of possibility for particular acts, we also should continue to find better ways to identify and to intervene in emergent exigencies animated by our profound limits. 相似文献

Nine ancient Egyptian sarcophagi of the twenty-fifth to twenty-sixth dynasty, one Ptolemaic Hawk Mummy, and one Amarna fresco were examined in the collections of the San Diego Museum of Man. Binding media, pigments, wood identification, deterioration and alteration products were identified. The pigment palette represents the basic suite of ancient Egyptian pigments: charcoal black, red ochre, yellow ochre, Egyptian blue, green earth, calcite, and gypsum. In the case of the Hawk mummy, oxammite was identified as a degradation product, together with magnesium phosphate, the first identification of oxammite in ancient artefacts. In a child’s coffin, realgar and orpiment were additionally identified. The binding media for practically all of the coffins studied was confirmed as gum Arabic with only one example of gum tragacanth found from a wall plaque from Amarna. Wood identification showed that Ficus sycomorus had been used, rather than the assumed cedar of Lebanon for coffin manufacture. One unidentified species of shrubby wood was also found. Some of the coffins had been restored, with one having a completely repainted face, in rutile, and the child’s coffin has an attached foot-box with modern screws. Possible indications of ancient reuse were found during the study. 相似文献

Scientific journals are ordered by their impact factor while countries, institutions or researchers can be ranked by their scientific production, impact or by other simple or composite indicators as in the case of university rankings. In this paper, the theoretical framework proposed in Criado, R., Garcia, E., Pedroche, F. & Romance, M. (2013). A new method for comparing rankings through complex networks: Model and analysis of competitiveness of major European soccer leagues. Chaos, 23, 043114 for football competitions is used as a starting point to define a general index describing the dynamics or its opposite, stability, of rankings. Some characteristics to study rankings, ranking dynamics measures and axioms for such indices are presented. Furthermore, the notion of volatility of elements in rankings is introduced. Our study includes rankings with ties, entrants and leavers. Finally, some worked out examples are shown. 相似文献

Abstract The Russian government is exerting increasing control over the country's media, although the media are resisting. This government-media conflict is relevant to Western academics and libraries, because the variety and quality of Russian periodicals is at stake. In addition, if the media are constrained, publishers of books are likely to experience restrictions, too. The difficulties the government is having in controlling the media, however, are a measure of how much Russia has changed. At the same time this conflict is occurring, book publishing is thriving. Official statistics show the number of titles published surpassed even the previous record set in 1977. Planning is in progress to restructure the state book industry sector, including publishing, printing and distribution. Book prices have increased more rapidly than inflation, and postage costs have also increased. Russian Press Service is doing its best to keep its prices to Western libraries down. 相似文献

SUMMARY Walking into what remains of one of the state's largest public libraries and finding no indication a library was ever there is indescribable. Walls, tables, and shelving gone. No sign of a book, a magazine, a computer, or a video found. Only the terrazzo floors, battered support columns, and a stiff summer breeze blowing unrestricted where large windows once offered spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico remain. Helping libraries cope with such a disaster is the purpose of this article. The observations and conclusions are those of an outsider looking in, a much safer, but not necessarily wiser, place. 相似文献

This study explores how differences in three communication‐related structures central to organizational work—coordination methods, workplace technologies, and feedback cycles—influence organizational members' experience of eleven dimensions of time—flexibility, linearity, pace, punctuality, delay, scheduling, separation, scarcity, urgency, and present and future time perspectives. Analyses of data from five residential services departments in a West Coast University revealed that differences in coordination method, technology type, and feedback cycle characteristics helped to shape members' experience of ten dimensions of time—flexibility, linearity, pace, punctuality, delay, separation, urgency, scarcity, and future and present time perspectives. As hypothesized, members of work groups whose feedback cycles included an extended task completion interval and high task variability exhibited a greater future‐time perspective than group members whose feedback cycles were characterized by brief intervals and low task variability. 相似文献
