Since the development of the Online Public Access Catalogues in the 1970s, libraries in Europe and America have devoted more and more attention to it. To date, it has already developed to the third generation. The OPAC System makes those users who lack training and experience be able to use it directly. It provides the users a kind of capability to access, which is neither like the order language with a very complex function, nor is it like the "menu" one with a very simple function. ABSTRACT The Fresnes public library chose to enhance its bibliographic catalog by loading the complete backfile and regular updates of the BNF authority files. This unique solution allows them to put an end to local cataloging (notably subject assignment and the maintenance of the subject index) and to considerably reduce the “cost per title cataloged” based on the formula proposed by ISO Standard 11620: Information and Documentation—Library Performance Indicators. The authority files improve the quality of online services: they reduce the number of unsuccessful searches, reduce aberrant responses and allow for numerous OPAC possibilities; they offer library staff a valuable aid in their mission of assisting the public; they facilitate and improve the tasks of collection development and management. The new information system anticipated for the opening of the new library in March will give the authority files a larger role. Beyond assisting the simple catalog search, the authority files will function as a search engine for the whole network. The CD-ROM and DVD-ROM readers, and a selected number of Internet sites will, in fact, link to the authority files (notably subject and corporate author files) by the authority record number, using the same headings as in the library catalog. 相似文献

Reference staff at many libraries are facing a sudden and dramatic change in the size and composition of their library's online catalog as a result of loading large files of Government Printing Office (GPO) retrospective cataloging records. While these records provide a much-needed increase in access to federal documents, they have special characteristics which make them difficult to work with. This article is intended to provide reference librarians with the basic "GPO cataloging record literacy" they need to deal successfully with the load of these records into an online catalog, and also to explore some of the specific implications of such a load for reference service. 相似文献

Prior to planning for implementing the NOTIS system, the Vanderbilt Medical Center Library had not fully cataloged its government publications, and records for these materials were not in machine-readable format. A decision was made that patrons should need to look in only one place for all library materials, including the Health and Human Services Department publications received each year from the central library's Government Documents Unit. Beginning in 1985, these publications were added to the library's database, and the entire 7,200-piece collection is now in the online catalog. Working with these publications has taught the library much about the advantages and disadvantages of cataloging government documents in an online environment. It was found that OCLC cataloging copy is eventually available for most titles, although only about 10% of the records have MeSH headings. Staff time is the major expenditure; problems are caused by documents' irregular nature, frequent format changes, and difficult authority work. Since their addition to the online catalog, documents are used more and the library has better control. 相似文献

[目的/意义]名称规范档在书目数据库中对书目记录的检索点进行规范化校验,通过实现标目的一致性,达到检索效率提升、目录汇集的目的。分析国外名称规范档的最新研究进展及实践,以期为中文名称规范档的发展研究提供借鉴。[方法/过程]通过对当前中文名称规范档建设存在的问题进行客观分析,结合国外名称规范档的研究进展及实践,提出中文名称规范档的建设发展方向。[结果/结论]当前中文名称规范档的建设存在着数据规模小、数据完全性差、数据共享性低问题,从国外名称规范档的发展看出,其不再局限于图书馆内部建设,开始向合作共建共享发展,规范数据不再面向OPAC系统,向开放互联发展。因此中文名称规范档的建设可从共建共享、构建新模型与规则、提升质量方面着手,发挥中文名称规范档在网络环境下的规范控制作用。 相似文献

ABSTRACT Catalogers have been reporting the ways they use the Internet for several years, but as yet there has been little evaluation done to determine for which areas of cataloging the Internet is a valuable tool and for which areas it is not as useful. A survey was conducted in an effort to elicit this information. The responses indicated four areas in which catalogers use the Internet: searching the OPACs of other libraries, communicating with colleagues, accessing online cataloging documentation and publications, and authority work.
