Within education policy in England the principle of inclusion has been established as a goal and a factor on which improvements in overall standards are seen to depend. Prominent within the drive to raise standards has been a demonstrable need to improve the National Curriculum attainment of members of certain minority ethnic groups, some of which are characteristically bilingual. In the context of education in England, this paper explores the relationship between bilingualism and inclusion, examining, on the one hand official attitudes to bilingualism, and bilingual support as expressed in the publications of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) and on the other on the reflections of a number of bilingual teaching assistants. 相似文献

A growing body of empirical studies indicates the educational benefits of bilingualism. Despite this tendency, bilingual minority students are being pressured by school authorities to shed their mother tongues. We conducted qualitative interviews with Turkish‐bilingual and native‐monolingual students in Flemish (Belgium) secondary schools to investigate how students evaluate their languages, how Dutch monolingualism is imposed, and how students respond to the dominance of monolingualism. Our results indicate that the mother tongues of bilingual students are mainly perceived as a barrier to educational and occupational success, while the benefits of bilingualism are unknown. Thus, both Turkish‐bilingual and native‐monolingual students approved of speaking one language. We also found that monolingualism was strongly imposed on students by explicit encouragement, formal punishment when bilinguals speak their mother tongue, and exclusion of foreign languages from the cultural repertoire of the school. These results are discussed as they relate to policy‐makers, scholars of bilingualism and institutional racism. 相似文献

Bilingual education has more than 50-years’ history in the world.It has gained the attention from the world since 1960s in some western countries,such as the USA and Canada.With the growth of international business and the appearance of the global village,bilingual education has become a hot issue in China.This article generally outlines the picture of bilingual education in the world.Then,it describes the development of bilingualism under Chinese contexts.Above all,the models of the bilingual education have been explicitly introduced to build up the basis for further investigation.Besides,the two main periods of the bilingual education in China have been described based on the empirical literature.In the end,the influential factors of the development of bilingual education have been discussed from five main perspectives:economic,social,educational,cultural and political framework.However,there is a lack of documentary resources and experimental materials for the scaffolding of bilingual education in China,which requires further investigation. 相似文献

在多元文化并存的时代,少数民族双语教学无疑是传承民族文化的主要形式,也是我国宪法和民族区域自治法赋予少数民族的权利,更是党的民族政策的重要内容之一。文章结合藏汉双语教学的调查,认为双语教学在推进的过程中,面临诸多问题,表现在文化选择、学生出路以及民族文化传承等方面存在的困惑。究其原因,与师生的双语态度复杂多变、选择更为现实以及民族语言使用环境弱化有密切关系。从W.F.麦凯,M.西格恩双语教育的＂三维目标＂出发,提出了增强师生民族意识、出台相应政策以及因地、因族制宜分类推进民族双语教学的对策建议。 相似文献

Formative assessment, bilingualism, and argumentation when combined can enrich bilingual scientific literacy. However, argumentation receives little attention in the practice of bilingual science education. This article describes the effect of a formative assessment-based pedagogical strategy in promoting university students’ argumentation. It examines the written and oral arguments produced by 54 undergraduates (28 females and 26 males, 16–21 years old) in Colombia during a university bilingual (Spanish-English) science course. The data used in this analysis was derived from students’ written responses, and audio and video recordings. The first goal of this study was to determine how this teaching strategy could help students increase the use of English as a means of communication in argumentation in science. The second goal was to establish the potential of the strategy to engage students in argumentative classroom interactions as an essential part of formative assessment. The findings show that the strategy provided participants with opportunities to write their argumentation in Spanish, in English and in a hybrid version using code-switching. Educational implications for higher education are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The Colorado Reading to Ensure Academic Development Act requires grade-level attainment in literacy in English for students in grades K-3. Its practical outcome, however, has been to pressure schools with bilingual programs to shift their instructional language allocations towards more English in the early grades. Proposed rule revisions debated by the state Board of Education sought to facilitate testing in students’ language of instruction for those in bilingual programs. Analysis of written and verbal opposition to the proposed rule revisions demonstrates the persistence of insidious ethnoculturalist discourses opposing bilingual education as well as the cooptation of liberal multiculturalist discourses that, while framing bilingualism as an asset, argue that it is underdeveloped in bilingual programs that do not include English instruction from the outset. Given that bilingual instruction has demonstrated time and again that it benefits students acquiring English in schools, such new discursive turns pose a threat that must be recognized to fend off further legislative and regulatory attempts against bilingual education. 相似文献
