ABSTRACT

Since Idaho State University Libraries’ implementation and promotion of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) in 2014, its electronic resources team continues to troubleshoot seamless content discovery for library patrons. But nothing prepared us for the kind of content issues the Library would have to deal with on a day-to-day basis. This report discusses ways of managing content in EDS to improve discovery of resources, including linking issues to ClinicalKey records and dealing with “bound with” local catalog records. It also addresses obstacles and solutions, as well as the authors’ experience working with EBSCO Support.  相似文献

Due to the proliferation of electronic resources, fewer users visit the library. Traditional classroom instruction and in-person consultations are no longer sufficient in assisting library users. Librarians are constantly seeking new ways to interact with patrons and facilitate efficient use of electronic resources. This article describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of a project in which desktop-sharing software was used to reach out to users at remote locations. Various ways of using this tool are described, and challenges and implications for future expansion are discussed.  相似文献

Digitized special collections and institutional repositories present unique challenges to libraries struggling to identify marketing strategies that will entice patrons to these services. These collections, which do not have the same mass appeal as full-text articles or author book readings, still must attract use. This case study explores an academic library’s attempts to actively market its digital special collections. They advertised their collections via published marketing materials, a library services fair, and a photography contest. The results were that high-quality, intense, marketing for a general population does not work for specialized digital collections because the subject areas are too narrow for general interest. The scope of the audience was also misplaced since the collections had a greater market outside the university than with the local students. The authors looked at digital special collections that were successful to see what worked to market collections to outside users. They found that collections that were connected to external resources that were affiliated with different interest groups were successful with minimal marketing. The method of linking collections to Wikipedia was identified as a simple and effective method that was more effective than linking the collection to more niche sites. The authors conclude that academic libraries should utilize more focused, community-connecting approaches in order to engage the specialized patrons of digital special collections.  相似文献

Information overload interferes with our abilities to use information effectively. It represents a challenge in searching print as well as online collections. Academic librarians have developed strategies to help their patrons reduce the effects of information overload. This article provides best practices employed by academic librarians to reduce their users’ information overload. Five themes emerged in a review of the literature: information presentation, library instruction, user strategies, librarian roles, and software technologies. Information literacy instruction remains particularly important in combating information overload since the promotion of users’ research skills facilitates their search competencies. Research on information problem solving that focuses on metacognitive strategies may help decrease information overload among users searching digital libraries.  相似文献

In her presentation titled “How to Market Your Library’s Electronic Resources” at the Mississippi State University Libraries’ eResource &; Emerging Technologies Summit in August 2013, Marie Kennedy provided research, strategies, and applications that answer the question, “How … do librarians best connect their patrons to appropriate electronic resources?” While librarians typically may resist the application of marketing strategies and terminology to library operations, we all have in common the challenge to connect patrons to the resources available to them. Kennedy presented her nine components to the marketing cycle and explicated cross-disciplinary techniques, evidence-based approaches, and experiments with crowd sourcing in pursuit of effective marketing.  相似文献

通过分类、分层随机抽样的方式对北京、南京、上海、杭州、深圳等地用户对图书馆移动信息服务需求进行调查分析,结果表明:信息内容需求方面,图书馆用户对专业性阅读和休闲性阅读都有需求,对专业性阅读需求程度高于休闲性阅读,内容载体形式以图书、期刊和报纸为主;在信息服务需求方面,目前用户最需要的移动终端是手机,对图书馆开展个性化服务的需求很强烈。进而提出了图书馆移动信息服务的内容模式、技术模式和服务策略。  相似文献

Today, access to digital information is essential to patrons using public libraries, whether they have contact with computers at home, work or school or whether the public library is their only contact. In order to evaluate and ultimately enhance public library digital resources and services, it is critical for administrators, librarians and digital information architects to recognize the impact their current digital offerings have on users. Recommender systems can be a powerful tool for digital libraries if they implement the systems right to information seekers. While patrons have shown an increased interest in recommender systems, digital libraries ought to offer personalized services and assist users both novice and experienced with more sophisticate information retrieval technologies. During the 1990s the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) has undergone a transition from collections comprised exclusively of tangible print on paper or fiche publications to a mix of print and electronic materials. This article examines the impact of this transition on depository library operations—both collections and services—at the turn of the millennium. The discussion of reference service on depository materials is considered within the context of G. K. Zipf’s law, that is, people will tend to seek the path of least effort in gathering information. Given this tendency, the extensive use of the Web to deliver electronic depository materials redirects depository library users away from depository shelves to Web workstations, and leads depository librarians to build Web pages to direct their patrons. The conclusion is that for depository libraries the new collection mix poses a management paradox—the FDLP receives thousands of tangible documents each year, yet it must maintain new services for patrons turning increasingly to Web-based resources.  相似文献

From trial to implementation, technical services staff play an important role in shaping awareness and expectations of new or updated electronic resources. With appropriate message control during the rollout process, technical services staff can positively influence understanding and awareness of resources while keeping co-workers’ and patrons’ expectations in check. At the same time, by embracing this public service role, technical services acts as a full partner with public services in mediating resources to patrons. This article explores technical services’ public-facing role by describing a protocol for managing rollouts that emphasizes timing internal and external communications, providing training and support materials, and maintaining accuracy and objectivity in all rollout communications.  相似文献

在数字图书馆建设中,不同资源库和平台使用独立的技术框架、资源格式和应用程序,导致存在"孤岛"问题,不同机构在资源共享上存在障碍,尽管近年业界就数字资源集成开展了一系列研究和实践,但这些研究和实践主要面向发现服务,读者在资源使用和管理上仍然受"孤岛"问题制约。国际图像互操作框架(IIIF)是由国际图书馆、博物馆、档案馆等机构推出的一项技术标准,用于定义一组规范的资源传输接口(API),促进异构平台和资源库对图像资源的交换和共享。文章引入IIIF技术,讨论如何促进用户一站使用和多来源集成资源,并就改进发现服务的性能进行探讨。文章采用文献调研法、访谈法、案例分析法等方法对IIIF在数字图书馆中的应用展开研究。首先就IIIF的特点进行分析,包括:独立于系统环境;开放的应用建设;保存与使用分离。在此基础上,提出IIIF在数字资源集成中的应用设想。在数字资源集成中,IIIF的主要应用包括:搭建一站资源使用环境;为用户安装专业浏览器;为用户集成资源创造条件;建设虚拟特色数据库。  相似文献

Academic, public or special librarians interact with a variety of patrons–students, faculty members, community patrons, or other employees–and often need tools to manage their time and responsibilities in the library. Scheduling appointments and events often takes an inordinate amount of time away from their most important work. This paper reviews LibCal, an online calendaring platform, and three of its components: the appointment scheduler, event scheduler, and room booking service. The functionality of each LibCal component will be thoroughly discussed along with its pros and cons based on the author’s experience. Handheld electronic devices are becoming popular and are playing an increasingly important role in the distributed learning environment. Enabling library users to maximize their access to library resources through these devices involves challenges that include determining the level of interest among users, identifying relevant resources, and establishing technical and compatibility standards. Affordability of devices for consumers, and availability of resources and support for handheld computing initiatives within libraries must also be considered. This study examines issues and challenges surrounding the design and delivery of library services and resources for personal digital assistants (PDAs) at Royal Roads University Library, finding that there are beneficial research applications for handheld devices that can be implemented even while related technologies continue to evolve.  相似文献
